The New Spider-Man Movie May Be Directed By Drew Goddard

The search is still on to find a a new, young actor to take on the role as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but today it looks like a different major puzzle piece has fallen into place. New reports are suggesting that the 2017 untitled Spider-Man movie may have found its writer/director, and if the source can be believed, it's none other than Cabin in the Woods filmmaker Drew Goddard.

This story first appeared over on Latino-Revew, with an inside source telling them that Goddard is now attached to make the new film - though The Wrap seems to say that he is currently only in talks rather than being officially attached. If made official, the Spider-Man movie would be only the filmmaker's second feature, though he has had an extensive career on both the big screen and the small - having also previously worked as a writer on television shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Alias, Lost and on the movie Cloverfield. This would be his first foray into big blockbuster filmmaking, but his past work is great enough for us to have full confidence in his abilities.

As I wrote about earlier this year when the landmark deal between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures was first announced, Drew Goddard is a rather perfect choice to helm the new Spider-Man movie. He first established a relationship with Marvel back in November of 2013 when he signed a deal to serve as showrunner for the Netflix series Daredevil, and while he ultimately left that gig, he did so because Sony had hired him to helm the Amazing Spider-Man spin-off movie The Sinister Six. As a result of this, Goddard is the only filmmaker out there currently who has (albeit brief) experience with both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Spider-Man. As such, he is a natural fit.

At this point, the details of Spider-Man's future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a bit unclear, though we do expect that the whole situation will start clearing itself up in the coming weeks/months. This is because the web-slinger is set to make his Marvel debut in Captain America: Civil War, which will be starting production this spring. Obviously this means that an actor needs to be found soon, but reports have said that the studio is looking to attach a director for the 2017 Spider-Man movie before they settle on a star to play the character - which means that we can perhaps expect those two official announcements to come close together.

You can be sure that we'll be keeping a close eye on this situation, and keeping our fingers tightly crossed that the new Spider-Man gig is Drew Goddard's to direct. In the meantime, what do you think about the choice?
