Why Geena Davis Thinks She'll Have To Sit Out Of Beetlejuice 2

Few films from the 1980s have developed a legacy quite as bizarre as Tim Burton’s beloved classic, Beetlejuice. The film defied the trappings of genre and made bona fide stars out of Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis and Michael Keaton. However, while Michael Keaton, and Tim Burton will once again team up for a long-awaited sequel, don’t expect Geena Davis to show up in the film. The actress recently revealed that she hasn’t been approached to take part in Beetlejuice 2, and the reasons have to do with the logic of the paranormal.

During a recent phone interview with radio personality Tony Loconsole, Geena Davis admitted that she doesn’t think she will take part in the upcoming Beetlejuice 2:

No I keep reading about it, but I have never heard anything about it, but you know I hope so too, it's a great idea. I don't think I can be in it because ghosts don't age. You know Alec and I, one of us has aged a lot.

So for those of you who wanted to see Geena Davis return for the upcoming sequel, it looks like we have some bad news. She hasn’t heard anything about whether or not Tim Burton wants her to return for Beetlejuice 2, and it's looking like she won't be coming back. That being said, as much as we want to see her return, she does have a point: ghosts don't age. Although she still looks great, there’s no denying that she and Alec Baldwin have gotten older since 1988, and as such it would be hard to explain for their respective characters.

Although Geena Davis seemingly won’t return for the highly anticipated Beetlejuice sequel, that doesn’t mean that the film won’t feel familiar. With Tim Burton returning behind the camera, as well as Wynona Ryder and Michael Keaton returning in starring roles, it seems likely that Beetlejuice 2 will still maintain the aura of a genuine sequel.

The original Beetlejuice hit theaters all the way back in 1988 and became an instantly endearing. Solidifying the star power of Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin and Michael Keaton, the supernatural horror comedy centered upon a recently deceased couple that enlists the help of a mischievous spirit to scare away their home’s new occupants. Considering the recent resurgence of classic properties from the 1980s lately – look no further than the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot for an example of such a phenomenon – we’re not surprised that Beetlejuice 2 has gotten people this excited.

Of course, at this early stage of development things could very well change. Although Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis don’t seem to be involved in the upcoming Beetlejuice 2, Tim Burton could find a way to potentially include them in the sequel’s narrative at some point. We will keep you posted regarding any and all updates pertaining to the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel as they became available to us!
