The Han Solo Movie Adds A Sing Street Star

Sing Street Ian Kenny

The untitled Han Solo movie is now in the middle of production, but evidently not everyone in the cast was added before the start of principal photography. Word is now out that the blockbuster has put another actor on its roster with Sing Street actor Ian Kenny signing a deal to appear.

Variety has the news of the casting addition, but unfortunately they don't provide any details about the role that the young Irish actor will be playing in the film. Making it all the more challenging to pin down who he will play is the fact that we now know that the film will be set over the course of six years and feature Han Solo on many notable adventures. So will Ian Kenny be a part of the backstory behind the rogue smuggler acquiring the Millennium Falcon? Or perhaps is a player in the relationship between Han and Chewbacca? Right now we have no idea.

What we do know is that Ian Kenny is joining an impressive ensemble. Writer/directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have put together a ridiculously talented group of young actors, with Alden Ehrenreich boldly stepping into the boots of one of Harrison Ford's most famous characters. Donald Glover is one of the film's main supporting stars - the Atlanta creator/star playing young Lando Calrissian - and Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Michael K. Williams fill out the rest of the main parts. We know little to nothing about the parts that most of them are playing, but that is weirdly doing nothing to quell our excitement for what's in store.

Ian Kenny got his professional start as an actor starring in 12 episodes of the Irish television series Fair City, and made his feature debut playing the aggressive bully-turned-roadie Barry in John Carney's critically-beloved teen drama Sing Street. With the exception of a 2014 short called Poxy, that's the full extent of his resume, so signing on to the Han Solo film is an extra kind of big deal for the young star.

Based on a script by father/son team Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, the Han Solo film is now in production in England, and the current plan is to have the film be released on May 25, 2018 (just a few months after the theatrical premiere of Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi). We should hear more details - including possibly the official title - in just a few weeks, as Star Wars Celebration is set to go down in Orlando in a few weeks, specifically during the third weekend of April. Naturally, CinemaBlend will have feet on the ground at the event, so be sure to stay tuned for all of our exciting coverage!
