Venom Got A Romantic Comedy Trailer, And It's Fantastic

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Venom!

This holiday, Deadpool 2 is returning to theaters in a family friendly holiday package with Once Upon a Deadpool. The Merc with a Mouth isn't the only one mixing things up though, and getting into the holiday spirit. Venom is coming to digital and home video next month. A trailer for the release reimagines the film as a romantic comedy. Check out the fantastic rom-com Venom trailer below.

At first you might think that this is a trailer that a clever fan cut together, but it is actually from the official Sony Pictures Entertainment YouTube channel. It's amazing how well this is cut to rework the goofy comic book film into a romantic comedy. All it takes is the right collection of scenes and dialogue from the film. With a little extra spice and boom, voila, Venom is a believable rom-com.

The way the trailer starts is great and so familiar, as we've all seen rom-coms and holiday movies with that similar jingle music and shots of a glowing city. The title card "this holiday" immediately evoked the font of that most quintessential of Christmas romantic comedy movies: Love Actually. It starts with Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock clearly troubled, holding an engagement ring sets the perfect stage for what's to come.

The trailer paints Eddie as a man lost in love before someone new and special comes into his life, someone exotic and very foreign. The Venom and Eddie romance is meant to be, and Eddie helps Venom to see the good in the world, as all great loves do.

This romantic comedy version of Venom also seems to have a bit of a weird love triangle going on. Venom loves Eddie and Eddie loves Venom, but Eddie also loves Michelle Williams' Anne Weying. And Anne is also kind of involved with... both of them really. Put simply, it's complicated.

Venom even provides a passionate kiss to sell the rom-com angle with She-Venom kissing Eddie Brock as the symbiote transfers to him. Basically, everyone has kissed everyone here. Anne's final line in the trailer about the kiss is great too and really puts the stamp on the comedy side of this romance.

I could totally stand to see a longer cut of this trailer too. Perhaps adding in the scene with Eddie hopping into the lobster tank at the restaurant, maybe as a grand romantic gesture(?) or his freakout in response to Anne and Dr. Dan's romance. Let's be honest, that's hardly the weirdest thing we've ever seen in a rom-com.

Lady and the Tramp's iconic spaghetti dinner showed how great romances can be formed over great food, so I could also see Eddie and Venom sharing tots being cut in to add to their whirlwind romance.

Venom arrives on Digital HD December 11 and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD December 18. For all the biggest rom-coms, superhero movies and everything in between hitting next year, check out our 2019 Release Schedule.
