Thanks to the first teaser trailer, we know that when Peter Parker goes on his European adventure in Spider-Man: Far From Home, he’ll be getting new duds for his fight with the Elementals. He might not be the only one of his school group getting battle-ready though, because it looks like Zendaya’s MJ is getting a weapon in the film, and it is quite serious looking. Check it out below:
Wow, there are weapons and then there are weapons. The snarky Michelle isn’t holding some S.H.I.E.L.D. firearm here or Stark Industries tech; she’s wielding a freaking mace! More specifically, MJ is carrying what appears to be a morning star, a medieval weapon used to bash and bloody one’s enemies.
If this toy is anything to go on, it looks like MJ is not playing around in the upcoming film. A morning star isn’t a 'leave you unharmed while waiting for the police to arrive' type weapon, so the Elementals and Mysterio will have more to worry about than just the friendly neighborhood Web-Head.
Just this past week, CinemaBlend’s Matt Wood recounted many of the times that promotional toys have spoiled the movies that they’re tied into. There are plenty of examples, especially in the comic book movie genre, which naturally lends itself to toys and action figures. Funko's tweet revealing Spider-Man: Far From Home Funko Pops! at the New York Toy Fair would seem to be another addition to that list, but we don’t know for sure yet.
Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo has said that he likes the supposed toy leaks for MCU films because they are often wrong and based on old or different concepts. So it is entirely possible that Zendaya’s character will not get a weapon in Far From Home, or she might wind up getting a different weapon than what we see here in this Funko Pop!
Still, this is a very weird weapon for MJ to be holding. The other Funkos we see here are basically of stuff that has already been glimpsed in the first trailer like Spider-Man’s multiple suits and Happy Hogan with a big check. If Zendaya’s MJ does indeed get a weapon in the film, how and why is it this one?
If I had to take a shot in the dark, I would guess that the Elementals or some villains attack while MJ, Peter, Ned and the rest of the group are visiting a museum that has a medieval history section. MJ isn’t the 'damsel in distress' type, and in an effort to save herself and her friends, she breaks glass in case of emergency and grabs this weapon.
We’ll find out for sure when Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 5. Check out our 2019 release schedule to see all the movies you can look forward to this year.
