What’s Happening With Jumanji 4? Here’s The Latest From Karen Gillan

Karen Gillan in Jumanji

Over the past few years, nostalgia has proven a powerful force in the entertainment industry. As such, a ton of beloved properties returned to theaters, including Dwayne Johnson’s Jumanji flicks. The pair of adventure movies are a hilarious family-friendly romp, with a stellar cast that includes Guardians of the Galaxy icon Karen Gillan. It’s been a few years since The Next Level arrived, so are we going to get a Jumanji 4? Luckily Gillan recently addressed that very concern.

Karen Gillan has played the video game avatar Ruby Roundhouse in the last two Jumanji movies, allowing her to embody multiple characters who are taking on the fighter’s mantle. Given the wild success of that pair of blockbusters, fans are wondering whether or not a fourth installment to the property is coming. Gillan was asked this very question, responding with:

I actually don’t know anything about the next one. Nobody has spoken to me, so I think - I don’t know. I assume they’ll make one and I don’t know how they’re gonna tackle that. But I hope they make another one because it’s so much fun.

Well, there you have it. It seems that Sony currently doesn’t have any plans for Jumanji 4. While this doesn’t rule out the possibility of another sequel forever, at least moviegoing audiences know they shouldn't hold their collective breath for any announcements.

Karen Gillan’s comments to Collider is an honest look into what it’s like working within a major franchise like Jumanji. And while her ongoing role as Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe requires the actress to remain tight-lipped, security on Jumanji seems noticeably more laxed. As such, Gillan could be honest about the lack of plans for a future movie… at least for now.

While moviegoing audiences might be disappointed to learn that there aren't currently any plans for Jumanji 4, it actually does make a great deal of sense. Since so many projects were put on hold last year as a result of the pandemic, studios are still catching up and releasing movies that should have already hit theaters. Add in the insanely busy schedule of star-producer Dwayne Johnson, and the scheduling simply doesn’t add up.

Of course, it only seems inevitable that Sony would eventually move forward with Jumanji 4. Both of the previous two movies made an insane box office profit, and featured a stellar cast. What’s more, Jumanji: The Next Level definitely left the door open for more installments-- especially given its mid-credits scene.

As for Karen Gillan, she’s no doubt keeping busy for the foreseeable future. She’s got a number of highly anticipated projects coming to theaters, including Gunpowder Milkshake and Thor: Love and Thunder. What’s more, Marvel fans are eager to see what comes for Nebula in various Guardians of the Galaxy projects, including Vol. 3 and the mysterious Holiday Special.

Gunpowder Milkshake will hit theaters on July 14th. In the meantime, check out the 2021 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience.
