Philosopher Sun Tzu once said, “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” So Ryan Reynolds must be quite prepared for whatever Free Guy is about to throw his way, as one of the enemies in Shawn Levy’s new action-comedy is himself, and a super jacked version at that. In a video that further develops Free Guy’s relationship with Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy”, we’re introduced to the aforementioned Dude. Another digital avatar, created by the evil Antoine (Taika Waititi) himself, he’s basically a version of guy that dials back on the heroism and charisma. In turn, the buffness and actual fighting stats are pretty pumped up, yielding a character that’ll make you laugh, scare the living daylights out of you, or both. Although listening to him talk in a confessional style interview, he doesn’t seem all that bad:
While this interview is obviously an opportunity for Ryan Reynolds to do what he does best, it also contains some new Free Guy footage. The real nugget hiding in this mock interview is a glimpse of Dude’s reign of terror in Free City, as he beats up on not only Guy, but also his best friend Buddy, played by Lil Rel Howery. Dude as a character is a total jerk, but Dude as a “person” is actually quite forthcoming on how he’s gotten to where he is today.
Never letting reality get in the way of a funny joke, Ryan Reynolds’ latest Free Guy gag has his face added to a very muscular body double. Embodying his own nemesis provided him an opportunity to go on another patented Reynolds riff, bringing up everything from using a smoothie made “exclusively of human muscle” to human growth hormones as the reason he’s so jacked for the role.
This new body comes with some downsides though, as Ryan Reynolds jokes that he can’t fit into the Deadpool suit anymore. Not to mention, Betty, his youngest daughter with Blake Lively was said to have been “born full grown, and wearing shoes” as a result of this new lifestyle. So if you’re looking to get yourself onto the Free Guy diet, you might want to be thankful it’s a fictional concept, as it’s rather nightmarish in its consequences.
Rest assured that while the reveal of Dude does kind of ruin a third act surprise in Free Guy, there’s still plenty more to feast your eyes and ears on in the film. August 13th is the big day that you can partake in the excitement, with tickets for the film on sale now.
