Anne Hathaway Reveals How Matt Damon Inadvertently Got Her To Stop Being Vegan

Anne Hathaway - Interstellar / Matt Damon - The Martian

In this business, you hear a lot about celebrity diets. The life of the rich and famous can certainly have a lot of benefits, but one of the downsides can often be that a camera or two (or three or fifty) can often be shining in your face, silently judging your figure. As a result, prominently-publicized celebrities can often be put under extreme pressures and put themselves through rigorous regimes. Sometimes they work wonders; other times, they put these actors and actresses under more stress than they're already under.

When it came to Anne Hathaway, the Oscar-winner was once a vegan. But she was convinced to leave that lifestyle by an unsuspecting fellow celeb: Matt Damon. As Hathaway explained, she was dining with Damon during a break from shooting Christopher Nolan's sci-fi drama Interstellar in Iceland. When they were out dining, she found herself caving under the pressure when Damon requested whatever the chef wanted to serve.

Here's what Anne Hathaway had to say about her Interstellar co-star's motivation:

So then I was the only chick and I’m the vegan and everyone’s just going with the flow. So I asked [she puts on a small embarrassed voice]: 'Is your fish local?' And they said: 'Do you see that fjord?' So I had a piece of salmon and my brain felt like a computer rebooting.

As Anne Hathaway said in her recent profile with Tatler, everyone was going "with the flow" and she didn't want to be singled out. So, she opted to divorce herself from the no-animal-products vegan mentality. In doing so, the actress claims she felt her brain rebooting like a computer, and it sounds like she doesn't hold many regrets about it.

Meanwhile, in addition to departing from the vegan diet, Anne Hathaway admits that she also gave up drinking. She made the decision last year, and the actress claims that she couldn't do it in moderation anymore. She felt it was making her "unavailable" for her young son. As Hathaway explained:

My issue is I just love it. So. Much. But the way I do it makes me unavailable for my son. My last hangover lasted for five days. I’d earned it: it was a day drinking session with friends that went into an evening birthday party with one of my drinking buddies. I will never be that person who can nurse a glass of wine throughout an entire evening.

It can be hard to change your diet and your predilections for certain foods or drinks. While there are many benefits to the vegan lifestyle, as practically any vegan will likely tell you, there are also some downsides along the way. And it sounds like Anne Hathaway made the choice to stay away from the vegan mentality and she hasn't reverted back to it since. Similarly, Hathaway felt it was time to stop drinking, and now she's living the sober life as well.
