Outlander Has Finished Production On Season 3, Check Out Sam Heughan On A Bicycle

Outlander brought an addictive combination of historical fiction, time travel, and romance to the small screen back in 2014, and the only downside has been how long we've had to wait between seasons. Only two seasons have aired on Starz so far, and it has now been more than a year since the Season 2 finale. We're still months away from the third season kicking off, but at least we know for sure that production on Season 3 has been completed. We know this thanks to star Sam Heughan, who posted a picture from set that gave a whole different look to Jamie Fraser. Check him out!

The third season of Outlander has been filming in South Africa, and that was apparently where Sam Heughan finished filming the latest batch of episodes. Of course, even if he hadn't referred to South Africa in his tweet, the odds are pretty good that we would have been able to guess that he's not in Scotland. The photo certainly doesn't look like it was taken on a Scottish moor somewhere.

We don't have too many details about Season 3, although book scribe Diana Gabaldon has confirmed that the show will follow the events of the third book a lot closer than Season 2 followed the events of the second book. Executive producer Ron Moore has said that the major book events will be in the season, even if they are reordered a bit. All things considered, the third season probably will not see Jamie Fraser riding a bright red bicycle. The bike may have just been Sam Heughan's preferred way of getting around set. That, or he was so ready for hiatus that he snagged the first bike he could find and took off... after posing strikingly for a photo.

Sam Heughan may actually be heading to the big screen in the not-too-distant future. Last month, he was in talks to star in a big Hollywood film, called The Spy Who Dumped Me, which would also star Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon. While Heughan has appeared in films earlier in his career, his gig on Outlander has given him the star power to appear in major motion pictures.

Of course, given that the Outlander book series currently runs for eight novels, Sam Heughan may be pretty busy on Starz for a while. If the events of the show continue to more or less follow the narrative of the novels, we're in for several more years of Jamie Fraser action on the small screen. We'll have to wait and see.

Starz has not yet announced an official debut date for Season 3, although we do know that the season premiere will air at some point in September. The first trailer points to all kinds of heartbreak and 1960s fashion, and Season 3 could be the most entertaining batch of episodes to date.
