“Crisis on Infinite Earths” is proving that DC Comics’ Multiverse is a vast place and, in the world of Batwoman, there are plenty of opportunities to name-drop characters who have also called Gotham City home. In Batwoman Season 1, Episode 2, titled “The Rabbit Hole,” the new CW series referenced Robin, Batman’s famous sidekick, for the first time, confirming his existence in the Arrow-verse.
Batwoman had a lot on her plate in “The Rabbit Hole,” but that doesn’t mean other DC Comics characters were left hanging by the wayside. As Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) acclimated to being the new savior of Gotham City, the Gothamites were still under the impression that Batman was really back.
After the GCPD truck carrying Alice (Rachel Skarsten), who’s been revealed as Kate’s sister Beth, falls over a bridge — a callback to how Beth originally “died” — Gotham’s astute radio host, Vesper Fairchild (Rachel Maddow), questioned where Batman was and why he didn’t rescue her. Vesper even wondered if the Dark Knight was busy with personal affairs.
Okay, people, time to get real. Massive explosion on the low bridge last night. The leader of the Alice in Wonderland gang is in the wind. And Batman was…not there. Was there a cowl convention we didn’t know about? Was it Robin’s high school graduation? Talk to me, Gotham. Did we put our hope in a ghost?
Not only was there confirmation of Robin’s existence, but Batwoman may have also revealed his age. Vesper could’ve been wrong in her estimation and Robin could be in college for all we know, but he definitely exists.
However, it’s unclear which Robin Vesper is even referring to, since there are approximately four. Dick Grayson is the first Robin, so there’s a chance it was him and he’s no longer in Gotham because he moved away to do his own thing and become Nightwing.
Additionally, in an earlier scene, Kate name-dropped another famous DC Comics character: Wonder Woman. In an exchange with Sophie Moore (Meagan Tandy), Kate avoided answering her ex-girlfriend’s question about whether it was her beneath the mask.
Here’s what she said when Sophie asked if Kate as Batwoman had saved her:
Besides, if I were going to save you in a dramatic fashion, I would totally dress as Wonder Woman.
Two famous superheroes name-dropped at once? The Multiverse definitely got a whole lot bigger. While Batwoman has so far mentioned Batman multiple times, it’s not likely that he’ll show up anytime soon. However, that doesn’t mean that Robin couldn’t drop in for a visit. It doesn’t even have to be Dick Grayson’s version of the character, as fans would also love to see Tim Drake’s iteration of the character as well.
Currently, there are two Robins on DC Universe’s Titans, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, and they’re portrayed by Brenton Thwaites and Walter Curran, respectively. With the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover coming soon and Burt Ward reprising his role as Robin from the 1960s Batman series, it seems like only a matter of time before Batwoman introduces Robin as more than just an Easter Egg.
