Following the announcement that Lucifer Season 5 would be its last, viewers got a glimmer of hope when it was reported that Netflix execs were in talks with the folks at Warner Bros. TV to bring back the series for Season 6. Tom Ellis was reportedly on board to reprise his role for a potential sixth season, but negotiations came to a halt in April. Now, Lucifer just took a huge step toward a Season 6 renewal at Netflix.
Tom Ellis was reportedly contracted to return for Season 6 of Lucifer if the show was officially renewed by Netflix. However, Ellis was allegedly displeased with the contract offer from Warner Bros. TV, which was reportedly adjusted several times to appease Ellis. Per Deadline, Ellis has finally closed a deal to return as Lucifer Morningstar and sources say that the rest of Lucifer’s cast members are also expected to reprise their roles for a potential sixth season.
It was unclear what issues Tom Ellis had with his new contract, but whatever they were seem to have been resolved and things are finally looking up again. With Lucifer showrunners Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson also on board to return for Season 6, the ball is now in the hands of Netflix execs. Although the streaming service has yet to officially confirm that a sixth season is happening, a renewal is reportedly expected to move forward.
Filming on Season 5 was cut short due to Hollywood-wide production shutdowns in March. However, Lucifer was reportedly only a few short days away from wrapping Season 5 and Season 6 was reportedly set to begin filming in September. That said, the cast and crew will have to finish up Season 5 first before starting production on a new season.
Netflix picked up Lucifer for Season 4 following its cancellation by Fox after three seasons. When it was announced that Netflix was bringing the show back for a fifth and final season, Ildy Modrovich explained why the show’s passionate fans shouldn’t push for a sixth season. Season 5 was touted as Lucifer’s final season, but something must have changed behind-the-scenes.
Now that Tom Ellis is fully on board again for Season 6, fans can rejoice once more! It’s unclear when or if Netflix will announce a renewal, but I’d imagine execs didn’t go through all that trouble to get Ellis and the whole crew back just to drop the ball. Either way, I’m hoping fans will get a confirmation soon.
