Teen Mom Star Fired By MTV For Racist Messages

Taylor Selfridge Teen Mom OG MTV

As Hollywood looks to correct the course and make amends for actions of the past, certain reality stars are losing their gigs as racist actions or tweets are resurfacing. Not long after Bravo cleaned house at Vanderpump Rules, MTV has decided to give a star of Teen Mom the boot. Taylor Selfridge has been removed from the cast following the rediscovery of racist tweets from 2012.

The tweets, which were first discovered by The Blast, featured commentary by Taylor Selfridge that disparaged both black and Asian people. In one tweet, Selfridge explained that her job required her to welcome all customers but that she didn't welcome black customers because they scared her. In another, Selfridge talked about his uncle's Asian girlfriend and wondered if "Aunt Ping" would make her sushi.

MTV was originally set to air Teen Mom OG At Home: Cory & Taylor’s Baby Special on Tuesday, but dropped the special and aired a Catfish repeat instead. The network released a statement condemning systemic racism, and saying that it had cut ties with Taylor Selfridge and decided not to air the special following her resurfaced tweets. Selfridge told a different story, and instead claimed on her social media it was her decision to leave.

As you guys know already our special didn't air tonight. I made the decision last week not to film the next season of Teen Mom OG with Cory for the benefit of myself and my daughter. I don't believe the reality TV lifestyle benefits me any further at this point in my life. With current events being at they are and reality TV being selective in who they apply rules to or what is considered acceptable behavior. I do not have any further respect. I apologize to anyone I have hurt or offended in the past. I have addressed my mistakes many times on the network, and I would like to move on and continue to be the best version of myself. My past does not define who I am today and I hope you guys can see the change. Please respect my decision to provide a normal, healthy life for my family.

Taylor Selfridge is currently in a relationship and has a child with Cory Wharton, who is biracial. Selfridge was first confronted about these tweets during an episode of Teen Mom OG by Wharton's ex Cheyenne Floyd, who is black and has a daughter with Wharton. At the time, Floyd expressed unease about having Selfridge around her daughter knowing the thoughts and feelings Selfridge shared about the black community on social media years before meeting Wharton. In March 2020, Floyd told E! she and Selfridge were on good terms.

Losing costars due to controversy and posts on social media is nothing new for Teen Mom, and only the latest in the franchise. In fact, in recent years it seems the show has booted more costars than those that have willingly left. Essentially, don't expect to see MTV welcome Taylor Selfridge back, regardless of whether she left or was fired.

With MTV pulling the latest episode of Season 8 of Teen Mom OG, it appears the reality series is done for the season. Of course, be sure to stick with CinemaBlend to see if that situation changes, and for the latest news happening in the world of television and movies.
