It goes without saying that we’re currently living in uncertain times, and a number of people are starting to feel physical and mental fatigue as a result. Despite this, many have found comfort and joy in their favorite TV shows and movies, with one of the most popular being The Mandalorian. The show is definitely filled to the brim with sci-fi action (and even includes an adorable alien), but Giancarlo Esposito believes the show holds an even great importance:
The Mandalorian’s iconic. It’s a hero’s journey, it’s a hero’s story, and people need heroes right now. We don’t have heroes that we can look up to, so we gotta be each other’s heroes. So that’s what Mandalorian does for us. It allows us to stand up and see an example of someone just doing his duty in service to someone else and the journey.
When consumed with the gorgeous and intriguing sights of The Mandalorian, it’s sometimes easy to forget that at its core, it’s the story of a man seeking to do the right thing. It’s a key aspect of the show and one that certainly doesn’t seem to be lost on Giancarlo Espositio. Of course, viewers are eager to see more of the story and, while speaking with Variety, the actor also teased a “power-packed” Season 2 from creator Jon Favreau, who may or may not already be working on the next season:
I’ve had a chance to have some conversations with him. So, I haven’t seen any of [Season] 2 yet, but it’s gonna be power-packed, and I think in Jon’s mind, he’s probably already writing [Season] 3.
The first season of The Mandalorian saw the titular character (also known as Din Djarin) risk his career as a bounty hunter and status as a Mandalorian to keep The Child safe. Along the way, he encountered allies like Cara Dune and Kuiil and came to blows with his fair share of foes, particularly Esposito’s Moff Gideon.
But throughout the obstacles and dangers, The Mandalorian still conveys one of the central themes George Lucas instilled in the Star Wars franchise – hope. As Dave Filoni mentioned during Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, George Lucas wants hope to emanate from every Star Wars project, and it can definitely be said that every single movie or TV show in the franchise conveys this message in some form or fashion. So with this in mind, Esposito isn’t wrong in saying we need this kind of show right now.
With global events like the COVID-19 pandemic still raging on, people will more than likely continue to seek out their favorite forms of media as a means to escape reality. And luckily, for Star Wars fans, they’ll be able to look no further than The Mandalorian.
