Surprise, Vikings Season 6's Final Episodes Will Hit Streaming Before Airing On TV

Most people would agree that 2020 could use a good ass-whupping, and who better to deliver that attack than a massive group of bloodthirsty vikings? That's right, History's hit historical epic Vikings is finally returning to fans' lives for what looks to be an action-packed final ten episodes, and it's happening before the year is over! However, things are being handled a little differently this time around. Rather than making its traditional linear debut on History Channel proper, Vikings will actually reach streaming audiences first.

In a surprising turn of events, the back half of Vikings Season 6 will drop all at once on Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday, December 30. So not only will Amazon Prime customers have the advantage over non-subscribers when it comes to watching Vikings' midseason premiere first, but the show's most hardcore fans will be able to binge-watch all ten episodes before it ever hits History Channel. Hell, even before the new year arrives. Bjorn and Floki would be proud of that dedication, although they would likely also be confused by "streaming" and "2-day shipping."

Vikings fans have long suffered through this midseason hiatus wondering about the fate of Alexander Ludwig's Bjorn in the aftermath of the mid-year finale's battle. It certainly appeared as if Alex Høgh Andersen's Ivar would have the advantage whenever the new episodes start up again, and I guess everyone (on Amazon) will have a chance to learn all the answers just a few days after Christmas.

Amazon also thankfully released a brand new look at the back half of Season 6, which hasn't unveiled a proper trailer since the first half of the season wrapped in 2019. Check it out below!

It's quite interesting that Vikings' final episodes have been snatched up by Amazon Prime Video, as opposed to Netflix. Not because Netflix objectively deserves it or anything, but because that's where creator Michael Hirst is already working on the sequel spinoff series Vikings: Valhalla, which is set to debut at some point in the future. It's obviously possible that all things Vikings could end up on Netflix in the future when Valhalla hits, but for now, there's another streaming giant in control.

This isn't even the first Vikings-related news to come out this week. Earlier, History announced that Michael Hirst is also behind a new miniseries project coming to the network that will focus on the bubonic plague hitting London in the 1600s. Clearly, Hirst is fond of characters who don't have regular access to bathtubs and toothbrushes.

To reiterate, the final ten episodes of Vikings Season 6 will hit streaming audiences on Wednesday, December 30, via Amazon Prime Video. While waiting to see who lives and who will be sent on their way to Valhalla, head to our Fall TV 2020 premiere schedule and our 2021 Winter and Spring TV rundown to see what other new and returning shows are popping up soon.
