Wait, Are WWE's Roman Reigns And UFC's Daniel Cormier Setting Up A Post-Wrestlemania Feud?

Roman Reigns Smackdown

WrestleMania 37 is only days away and, already, it seems like Roman Reigns is looking ahead to the future. The current Universal Champion will defend his title in a triple-threat match in night two of the big event, and he's already calling out future competitors to take him on. Specifically, Reigns called out former UFC champion Daniel Cormier, which has us wondering if the two have a feud after Mania already in the works.

The whole story started when Roman Reigns appeared on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show to promote his big match, WrestleMania 37 and apparently, start a fight with one of UFC's biggest stars. Reigns was asked whether or not he preferred one-on-one matches to his upcoming triple threat match with Daniel Bryan and Edge and, somehow, Cormier's name was thrown in the mix:

I like one-on=one to be honest. I'll smash anybody. One-on-one, whether it's Daniel Bryan, one-on-one Edge, D.C. [Daniel Cormier]. I'll smash them all one-on-one. Get him from behind the table and back in the gym, maybe, maybe he could have a chance. I don't know. It would be a short story with D.C.

The call-out by Roman Reigns to Daniel Cormier is interesting for a few reasons. First, with WrestleMania 37 around the corner, the alarms are going off in my brain that this could be a last-minute attempt for the WWE to rope in another star for its biggest event of the year. If that's the case, it seems like it could be working because Cormier has responded and indicated he's ready to rock:

Take note that Daniel Cormier tagged Vince McMahon and Triple H (though he tagged the wrong account for the latter) in the tweet, and not Dana White. This seems to signal Cormier is looking to join the WWE, perhaps for a shot to make Roman Reigns put his money where his mouth is inside an MMA octagon. There's money to be made by either organization in promoting a match, but will Reigns and Cormier actually throw down?

While no one can say for sure, WWE fans are well aware of the cross fandom the promotion has with UFC and the litany of successful wrestlers who started out with successful careers in MMA before entering the sport of pro wrestling. Ken Shamrock, Brock Lesnar (who went from wrestling to UFC and back), Ronda Rousey, and now Bobby Lashley are all living proof there's money to be made by former MMA fighters making the jump, so Daniel Cormier may be the latest looking to secure a bag with a WWE contract.

With that said, Daniel Cormier already has a good gig in the UFC post-retirement as a ringside commentator, and there's a question of how an appearance at WrestleMania 37 or any WWE event that followed may conflict with quarantine requirements for hosting future UFC events. Perhaps all parties are anticipating a near future where COVID protocols are relaxed, making any agreement much more feasible though, for now, it certainly will be a hurdle to navigate in any agreement between Cormier and the WWE. We have no clue whether anything will come of this feud, though I personally will be watching Wrestlemania 37 closely hoping to catch a glimpse of Cormier.
