Why One Chicago Is Missing This Week And When Med, Fire, And P.D. Will Be Back

One Chicago has been going strong on NBC despite the unprecedented challenges of production over the past year, but Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. are all missing from their usual time slots on April 28. Instead of the usual One Chicago Wednesday spanning a full night of primetime on NBC, the network is going with something else entirely, and fans will have to wait to see what happens next for the One Chicago crews.

Instead of One Chicago from 8 p.m. - 11 p.m. ET on April 28 as per usual, NBC will air President Joe Biden's Presidential Address to the Joint Session of Congress. The address kicks off at 9 p.m., which is usually the slot held for Chicago Fire, and continues through the normal Chicago P.D. slot at 10 p.m. As for Chicago Med, usually airing at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, NBC evidently is aiming to keep all three One Chicago shows on pace with each other by not airing Med either despite the open hour ahead of the Presidential Address.

The good news is that the three shows of One Chicago won't be missing from primetime for too long. Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. will all be back in their normal NBC time slots on Wednesday, May 5. With the One Chicago shows running for fewer episodes in the 2020-2021 TV season, much like major shows on another broadcast network, there have been frequent brief breaks between episodes to allow the finales to still air around the same time as usual in the spring. As for what comes in the next episodes, fans are likely in for some dramatic developments.

The next episode of Chicago Med that airs on May 5 at 8 p.m. ET is called "What A Tangled Web We Weave," and it looks like Med isn't wasting any time in exploring the fallout from Natalie's dangerous decision in the previous episode. Here's what's on the way:

An auto accident sends Goodwin into a spiral as she tries to help a young boy and his mother. Natalie’s secretive behavior begins to draw the attention of Dr. Marcel and Dr. Halstead.

Natalie's big decision about stealing the trial meds to give to her mom could actually affect Will in a big way, so it should be interesting if the secret already comes out while Goodwin is spiraling in "What A Tangled Web We Weave." Over on Chicago Fire, the upcoming episode will feature a story that seems like it could get complicated for Kidd. Called "Don't Hang Up," the episode will deliver this:

A mysterious caller who is in danger relies on Kidd to help save her and her brother. The firehouse helps Cruz get ready for fatherhood.

Kidd has had a complicated Season 9 already thanks to the pressure of her efforts to move up the ladder at CFD and the subsequent obstacles in her relationship with Severide, so hopefully whatever happens with this mysterious caller won't be too hard on her! The same probably won't be said of Chicago P.D.'s Burgess, based on the description for "Trouble Dolls" as the next new episode:

The shocking murder of a young pregnant woman leads the team on a desperate hunt for the killer, revealing something even darker than expected. Burgess has to make a tough decision about Makayla.

Well, I don't talk about Chicago P.D. as the darkest show in One Chicago for nothing! Burgess has already had a tough two seasons, suffering a brutal attack back in Season 7 and making the big decision to take in Makayla in Season 8, with a toll on her personal life. Only time will tell what the tough decision she has to make will entail, but at least that span of time is only a week more.

See the return of One Chicago to NBC on Wednesday, May 5 starting with Chicago Med at 8 p.m. ET, continuing with Chicago Fire at 9 p.m. ET, and concluding with Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. ET. The finales for all three shows aren't too far off, so be sure to tune in!
