I do not believe there is a single Guardians of the Galaxy character who is more widely adored (or truly adorable) than Groot, especially Baby Groot. Thus, the infantile alien tree is the perfect candidate to lead his own animated spin-off series on Disney+, which was officially announced during Disney’s Investors Day in December 2020. Not much other information about the I Am Groot TV show has been released since, which is why we have a generous number of questions regarding what is sure to be the cutest of the upcoming Marvel TV shows, starting with when we can expect to start streaming it.
What Is I Am Groot’s Disney+ Premiere Date?
As previously established, it has only been several months since Kevin Feige announced that Marvel Studios was developing I Am Groot - described as a series of shorts starring everyone’s favorite plant-based humanoid - late last year. Therefore, is it not difficult to understand why they have yet to confirm when it will be available to stream on Disney+. However, the release dates projected for the forthcoming installments of the Marvel movies that inspired this series do give us an idea.
How Might I Am Groot Connect To The MCU Timeline?
It is expected that The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will premiere on Disney+ in December 2022 as a festive lead-in to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is supposedly the final installment of director James Gunn’s cosmic Marvel franchise and is slated to hit theaters in May of the following year. This begs the question of whether or not I Am Groot will be a precursor or continuation of either of these titles - assuming that the show will have canonical ties to overall timeline of the Marvel movies in order, which is something we are not sure of at this point, either.
Will Other Guardians Of The Galaxy Characters Appear On I Am Groot?
That being said, if I Am Groot is canon, what other Guardians of the Galaxy characters might be involved in these stories? Will we see another epic Rocket and Groot team-up, could a stronger bond between he and Nebula (Karen Gillan) unexpectedly blossom, or will the title character be the only character we see in each of these shorts? I would not be surprised if it was the latter, but I also believe that would be a missed opportunity.
Will I Am Groot Hint At Groot’s Life Before The Guardians?
The Guardians of the Galaxy movies have provided us with some decent backstory for most of the main characters, with the exception of Groot, that is. Knowing that the series is a collection of loosely connected shorts, one of them could easily be a flashback that introduces us to the family Groot had on his original planet the first time he was a baby. Or maybe that epic Rocket and Groot team-up I proposed could actually be the first Rocket and Groot team-up.
Who Is Voicing Baby Groot On I Am Groot?
For each of the different stages of life that Groot has experienced throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far (adulthood in the first film, infancy in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and teenage years in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War), he has always been voiced by Vin Diesel - and in whatever language necessary, too. However, he was not named the star of I Am Groot, raising the question of whether or not he will reprise the character on the series. Of course, it is also possible that the show will not even feature dialogue - not that it would consist of a particularly vast vocabulary anyway.
How Long Will Each I Am Groot Episode Last?
When it was first described as a series of short adventures, I Am Groot sounded tailor-made for youngsters who do not have the attention span that an episode of, say, The Mandalorian, might require. However, just how “short” will each episode last? Could they be as quick as three or four minutes, or perhaps even as long as 10? I suppose it will be up to the showrunner.
What Will Be I Am Groot’s Animation Style?
On the big screen, Groot has been a CGI character in a (partially) live action world, but that will not be case for the fully animated I Am Groot. However, I do wonder what kind of animation style the series plans to utilize, such as the classic hand-drawn method or the more common CGI. I would be more willing to be that it will use cel shading like on fellow animated Disney+ original What If…?, as it has been noted for its ability to appear like a living comic book.
Who Will Be The Showrunner For I Am Groot?
Speaking of which, who is supposed to be running this show? While we can confidently assume that Kevin Feige will be credited as a producer considering he is the man who brought it to the public’s attention, the cast and crew is currently barren, leaving the showrunner’s name a mystery for now. Perhaps I Am Groot could take an anthology series approach and offer creative control to a different person for each episode. If that were the case, there is one name I would be most excited to see on that list.
Will James Gunn Be Involved With I Am Groot?
As the co-writer and director of the first Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 and the sole writer and director of its 2017 follow-up, James Gunn is, essentially, the one responsible for the cinematic iteration of this family of cosmic heroes that audiences have come to know and love. Yet, there is no confirmation on whether or not he will have any creative input on the development of I Am Groot, but I would argue he deserves to be involved in some capacity - if anything, a consulting producer, even. I understand that he has a lot going on right now, including his The Suicide Squad spin-off series centered on John Cena as Peacemaker coming to HBO Max, but it would be weird to not see his name pop up in the credits for a Guardians of the Galaxy spin-off.
I am actually not sure if we have scratched the full surface of possibilities regarding this upcoming Disney+ TV show. All that I can say with full certainty is this: I am Groot! (Translation: “I absolutely cannot wait to see it!”)
