American Horror Story: Coven Teaser Has Women Stuck On Walls

Fans know they are getting close to new episodes of American Horror Story when FX starts releasing actual video promos for the new season. If you paid attention last fall, you may remember that American Horror story was big on putting together short and vague teasers leading into Asylum. Now that we are prepping up for American Horror Story: Coven, the trailer is a little more witchy.

The 18-second teaser is as strange as many of last season’s promo spots. It’s also short, and probably reveals something about the new plot that will be revealed once the new season begins airing. In the teaser we see women spirited up walls in what looks like a very uncomfortable punishment. The teaser was released on Tuesday via the show’s Facebook page and is called “Detention,” which fits the image quite well, but not as nicely as the show’s tagline, “This October…lift your spirits.”

We’ve known for a while that the aptly-titled Coven would be about witches, but it wasn’t until a few days ago that we were given some of the big details about the series. Kathy Bates has been signed on to the series for a while, but now we know she will play a historical Louisiana socialite and serial killer who tortured many African Americans during her lifetime, named Marie Delphine LaLaurie. Angela Bassett is also signed on to play another real-life character, Marie Laveau, who practiced voodoo in the New Orleans area. Other characters in the series won’t be historical, but will include a witch named Flora played by Jessica Lange.

Bates, Lange, and Bassett already make for a pretty epic TV lineup, but in usual style, Ryan Murphy and FX has managed to sign on a slew of new and returning names to appear in the third cycle of the series. Early on Lily Rabe and Tessa Farmiga joined the series, followed shortly by Gabourey Sidibe, Patti LuPone, and Emma Roberts. So far, we’ve got a pretty female-driven cast, and it will be interesting to see how that translates into the storyline for the season. Producer Tim Minnear has already said the series will feature a “feminist” component and it seems that we may get some strong females but also a few sadistic ones.

American Horror Story: Coven will premiere on FX this October. In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for additional short teasers over the next couple of months.
