First Star Trek 2 Set Photo Reveals Benedict Cumberbatch As The Villain
It's here! It's finally here! J.J. Abrams and company have gone back into production for the long-awaited Star Trek sequel, and now we've got our first glimpse at what's happening on the set. Better yet, the photo features Benedict Cumberbatch, the Sherlock and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy star who plays the film's mysterious villain. Check out what happens when he goes head to head against Zachary Quinto's Spock in the photo below, via MTV.
![]() The set they're on-- which obviously has some green screen in the background-- is described as the "Space Barge," and they learned that at some point after this, Spock's Vulcan Nerve Pinch fails and Cumberbatch's villain regains the upper hand. MTV says that's a black Starfleet uniform Cumberbatch is wearing underneath his funky gray jacket, and while I'm not totally convinced-- couldn't that just be another high-collared shirt?-- it is interesting to speculate that he was a friendly member of Starfleet before turning into the film's villain. They've also got a blurrier and much less interesting shot of Zoe Saldana in character as Uhura, so you can check that out over there. In the meantime, let's talk about Benedict Cumberbatch! I'm a recent convert to the BBC Sherlock series, in which Cumberbatch is so charismatic and impressive-- while also playing the antisocial Sherlock-- that I'll follow him literally anywhere. The fact that his next big film is Star Trek 2-- which I was already anticipating feverishly-- is just an added bonus. Do you guys like what you see in this image? And how about the speculation that the villain might be a member of Starfleet? Sound off in the comments, Trekkers! |
