Baywatch Trailer: The Rock Shows Off The Avengers Of The Beach

Baywatch

Calling his squad "the Avengers of the beach," Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has brought the first clip to his comedic, yet action-packed, reimagining of Baywatch to the big screen. The trailer just landed on the mega-star's Twitter feed, and we have it for you below:

Baywatch, as almost everyone in this story likely already knows, was a cheesy beach-based television show that started in 1989 but ran throughout the entirety of the '90s. And it brought everything that characterized network television in the '90s to the forefront. It made household names out of David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson. It made sex symbols of Yasmine Bleeth and Nicole Eggert. And it's prime for an updated spoof, starring The Rock, Zac Efron and Alexandra Daddario

The first trailer isn't filled with that many surprises. It's pretty much exactly what you would expect a Baywatch movie to be in 2017. There's action, starting with Mitch Buchanan (The Rock) rescuing a beautiful woman from a fiery wreck... only to have her offer to sleep with him. There's a joke about Alexandra Daddario's breasts. And there's a plot about funding being cut to the Baywatch program, meaning that the crew has to single-handedly restore the Baywatch brand.

But there's also incredibly attractive girls and guys in swimsuits. It's Baywatch. You want much more than that?

This modern-day riff on Baywatch has The Rock as the leader of a dedicated bunch of lifeguards (some of whom can run in slow motion) having to take on a Ryan Lochte-esque Olympic medalist as a PR stunt to boost the profile of the Baywatch program. Only, there's also a crime ring invading the beaches, and there's bound to be some B-level sexual hijinks. This movie does come to us from the team behind Horrible Bosses, so that should give you an idea of the desired tone.

You know who we don't see in this first trailer? David Hasselhoff or Pamela Anderson. And yet, The Rock made a major deal of sharing time with these Baywatch legends when they came on set, so it's likely that their cameos are being saved for marketing material when we get closer to Baywatch being in theaters.

And when is that? Baywatch opens everywhere on May 19, 2017. Directed by Seth Gordon, it stars Zac Efron, Dwayne Johnson, Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra, Jon Bass, Kelly Rohrbach, Ilfenesh Hadera, and Hannibal Buress.
