Saw Plot Causes Confusion

The plot details for this year’s Saw entry are starting to trickle out, raising questions about just how this movie is going to fit in with the previous three chapters of the franchise as well as what it means for the future of Saw.

Bloody Disgusting brings the first look at the plot, as well as the major players involved. Here’s what Lions Gate has told the horror site:

Jigsaw and his apprentice Amanda are dead.

Now, upon the news of Detective Kerry's murder, two seasoned FBI profilers, Agent Strahm and Agent Perez, arrive in the terrified community to assist the veteran Detective Hoffman in sifting through Jigsaw's latest grizzly remains and piecing together the puzzle.

However, when SWAT Commander Rigg is abducted and thrust into a game, the last officer untouched by Jigsaw has but ninety minutes to overcome a series of demented traps and save an old friend or face the deadly consequences.

Interestingly, BD follows up the synopsis with a cast list. The first name on the list: Jigsaw, played by series regular Tobin Bell. But Jigsaw is dead. It’s right there in the synopsis, first sentence. So what’s the deal?

Well, according to Rotten Tomatoes (who also broke the news that the poster image above isn’t a poster, but a promotional tool), the producers are not going to yank audiences around on this one. Producer Mark Burgh told the site, “Tobin is dead. We don't jump the shark. It's not his twin brother. All these crazy ideas that I've heard, he's dead. All I will tell you is yes, he's dead and yes, he's in the movie.”.

I don’t know if it’s possible to be more vague about a character who is listed as dead and still the toplining cast member. I guess I should just be happy that Shawnee Smith isn’t included in the cast list. At least Amanda being dead actually means she’s dead, or at least not in the picture.

Saw IV hits theaters in October. If Jigsaw really is dead, not just “mostly dead”, this could possibly be the final chapter in the franchise. Typically sequels for the franchise have been greenlit by the end of October so I guess we’ll find out where the series lies later this year.
