Whedon On Spike

Fresh from seeing Serenity, I’m all excited about Joss Whedon… but not excited enough to be interested in a “Buffy” spinoff movie. I’m excited, not delusional and self-loathing.

But, MovieHole has the latest on that propose Spike spinoff movie we’ve been hearing rumors about for awhile. Apparently “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator Mr. Whedon has been out and talking about it, though it’s still hard to tell if it’s going to happen.

“We don't have a paradigm set up yet. We don't have anything solid to announce. I'm just making sure that the creative people I need are in place before I set up a whole deal and then James Marsters goes, "Gosh, you know? That's kind of behind me now." Well that makes sense. But then Whedon adds, “Or [if] I don't have a writer I can trust, because I don't have time to do it all myself; I need one of my peeps.” Wait a minute, he’s not writing it? My excite-o-meter just dropped from two to zero.

If it happens, it seems like Joss’s biggest concern is that the necessary actors will all be too busy. But it sounds to me like it might be him that’s too busy. Last week we learned that he’s signed up to write and direct the movie Goner next, and after that he’s still got that Wonder Woman movie to write and direct. He can’t put those invisible jet decisions off forever.

In short, there’s nothing really happening but a lot of talk right now. Whether that talk actually goes anywhere remains to be seen. If Serenity is a big success this Friday, odds are Joss Whedon will have the clout he needs to get done just about anything he wants, provided he has the time.
