Go ahead and watch the above video, which features the "exclusive CinemaCon footage" from James Mangold’s upcoming superhero flick The Wolverine – Snikt! Snikt! – and see if you agree with me that it should have been subtitled "It’s Going Down!" A good chunk of the 40-45 seconds of actual footage shown that features someone falling, someone jumping off of something, or just objects moving in a downward motion. Claws are released, ninjas leap from buildings, bodies are thrown around, someone jumps over a car, camera movements go downward, and we even get a shot of sunglasses slowly being taken off. For a movie that features an exceedingly over-the-top fight on top of a speeding train, there’s a lot of vertical going on here.

It’s an underwhelming piece of a trailer, and I’m sure the Japanese version would be better, like the trailer. But for all that this feels like a montage, it is a montage that features the reflective badassery that is Silver Samurai (Will Yun Lee) and the sultry villainess that is Viper (Svetlana Khodchenkova).

There’s no denying that this still looks worlds more engaging than the mess that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but it lacks all cohesiveness and doesn’t really clue anyone into the film’s storyline. They should have just showed a piece of a battle scene.

Based on one of Wolverine’s most exciting arcs, the 1982 limited series from Frank Miller and Chris Claremont, The Wolverine will follow Logan into Japan, where he his past and future combine to change his life forever. You’ll get a better feel for that by watching the Japanese trailer below, and you’ll get the full story when the film hits theaters on July 26, 2013.
