One Lengthy Spider-Man: Homecoming Scene Will Be Inspired By Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

From the earliest days of its development, the influence of John Hughes on Jon Watts' Spider-Man: Homecoming was made plain to see. With an unprecedented emphasis on Peter Parker's (Tom Holland) high school years, the film will pay quite a bit of homage to the legendary director's influence on 1980's teenage movies. One film that has played a huge role in Homecoming's development and production is Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and now it seems that there will even be a sequence in the Spider-Man movie that's directly inspired by Ferris Bueller's climactic race to get home. Homecoming's co-producer Eric Carroll opened up regarding the homage to CinemaBlend during a recent set visit and said:

They go through this great Ferris Bueller-inspired chase through this neighborhood, where these guys from the Shocker, they got in one good clock. Spider-Man was not expecting that. So they get a jump on him, they tear off, and Spider-Man gives chase. It's a lot of fun. He's running through people's backyards, he's encountering friendly dogs, things like that. We think it's going to be one of the signature sequences in the film.

CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell recently visited the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming to get a better sense of how the film has come together, and Eric Carroll made it clear that the movie is not shying away from the influences of classic high school films like Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The Homecoming sequence described in that quote should sound incredibly familiar to any self-respecting John Hughes fan out there, as it seems to take direct inspiration from the climax of Ferris Bueller in which Matthew Broderick's titular hero races through his Chicago suburb to beat his parents home and maintain the illusion that he has spent the day sick in bed.

Take a look at that timeless sequence from Ferris Bueller's Day Off below.

That scene has become iconic in the three decades since Ferris Bueller's Day Off debuted in theaters, and it has been lampooned time and time again in a wide variety of media -- from Family Guy to recent Domino's commercials with Stranger Things actor Joe Keery. The scene has, in many ways, become cinematic shorthand to signify a rebellious teen, and its inclusion in Homecoming seems like a perfect way to honor John Hughes' newfound influence on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, all we need is to get Peter Parker to sing "Danke Schoen" and we will be all set.

Regarding how it relates to Spider-Man: Homecoming, the scene will reportedly occur after Spidey confronts Donald Glover's character in the park.
