The First Look at Netflix's Mute Is Foreboding And Cool

2017 was a very good year for Netflix. The streaming service released several movies and TV shows that found critical and commercial success...or whatever Netflix qualifies for commercial success. The year saw releases like The Meyerowitz Stories, Okja, and Mudbound, and even the critically frowned upon Bright was a win. Netflix isn't slowing down in 2018, and one film to be excited about is Mute, the latest sci-fi movie from Duncan Jones. The movie has been pretty secretive, but now we've got the first footage in a new teaser ahead of the full trailer coming later this week. Check it out below.

The official Mute Twitter account has unveiled the first footage of the secretive sci-fi noir film from Duncan Jones. Though the teaser is only 10 seconds long and doesn't offer any tangible details, the bigger news is the announcement that the full-length trailer will be debuting on Tuesday, January 30. In the meantime, this ten seconds of footage should hold us off until then. Sci-fi fans will notice a clear inspiration from Blade Runner in the set design and overall vibe of this futuristic world. We've also got decent looks at characters played by Alexander Skarsgard, Paul Rudd, and Seyneb Saleh.

Set in Berlin 40 years in the future, the city has become a center of immigration where East meets West in what is described as a science-fiction version of Casablanca. Alexander Skarsgard (who had a very good 2017) stars as Leo Beiler, a mute bartender whose sole reason for living in the city, his lady love, has gone missing. His search takes him deep into the underbelly of the city and the only recurring clue is two American surgeons, and Leo can't tell if they are allies or the ones he should fear most.

Mute comes from director Duncan Jones, who sci-fi fans know for Moon, a well-liked, if under the radar, sci-fi movie. Jones followed that up with Warcraft, which failed to make an impression domestically but found a decent audience overseas. Still, it's fair to say that movie was a disappointment, so Mute can be viewed as a potential comeback for Jones. It certainly looks like an interesting flick, but we'll be able to better judge it once more footage drops on Tuesday.

Mute premieres on Netflix on February 23, 2018.
