Jeff Goldblum Would Be Interested In The Grandmaster Getting His Own Marvel Movie

Jeff Goldblum

Jeff Goldblum's career is full of roles as hilarious, entertaining and memorable characters that only he could have played. He added to his list of eccentric characters in last year's Thor: Ragnarok as the colorful, larger-than-life ruler of Sakaar, The Grandmaster. The character is one of those brilliant side players that really adds to the expansiveness of the MCU and gives it a fun comic book flavor. But could this cosmic character become the main attraction in his own film? When talk show host Jimmy Kimmel mentioned wanting to see Grandmaster get his own Marvel movie, Jeff Goldblum had this to say:

I would, too. I love all those guys at Marvel and Kevin Feige but the director of that, Taika Waititi, he's a genius. He helped create Flight of the Concords. You ever see that movie that he did, all improvised? He did an all improvised movie called What We Do in the Shadows. It's a great movie.

Jeff Goldblum seems genuinely enthusiastic about the possibility of a Grandmaster movie and totally down to reprise the role. Goldblum is clearly a huge fan of the character and enjoyed the experience of working in the Marvel machine. Part of that comes from getting to work with director Taika Waititi, who he lavished with praise on Jimmy Kimmel Live! This definitely gets the wheels turning about how fun a cosmic comedy about the Grandmaster in the vein of Thor: Ragnarok could be. Add to that wish list Taika Waititi as director, with him and Jeff Goldblum just improvising a lot, and you have something worth hoping for.

In the past, Jeff Goldblum has talked about his desire to have the Grandmaster team up with his brother, Benicio del Toro's Collector, in a future film, and Kevin Feige hasn't ruled out the possibility of the two characters appearing onscreen together one day. These two are fun as side players and string pullers, but are also two of Marvel's most quirky characters, with dubious morality. A brotherly adventure with them gallivanting across the galaxy sounds like pure gold to me.

I don't know if Marvel has room on its slate for a Grandmaster movie, but if the MCU continues to expand out into the cosmic elements, as I imagine it might, that provides more opportunities for the Grandmaster to show up again. That would probably happen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or some other hero's cosmic outing, but with Phase 4 almost a complete mystery, you can't rule out a Grandmaster movie. Either way, Jeff Goldblum sounds totally on board to return. Both Jeff Goldblum and Benicio del Toro contend that their characters are still alive in the MCU, and in lieu of his own full movie, I would love to see Marvel bring back the One-Shots and perhaps do a short film with the Grandmaster and the Collector just to see how these two mischief-makers interact.

While we await any possible return of the Grandmaster, you can next see Jeff Goldblum reprising the role of perhaps his most iconic character, Ian Malcolm, in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, in theaters this Friday, June 22.
