DC Has A Supergirl Movie In The Works

Supergirl comics

Ever since she debuted in the comics back in the late 1950s, Supergirl has not only been one of the most important figures in the Superman mythology, she's also one of the DC Comics universe's more well-known superheroes. In fact, long before superhero movies were plentiful in Hollywood, the Girl of Steel starred in her own live action movie, which spun out of the Christopher Reeve Superman movies. Nowadays, Supergirl is getting attention outside of the comics for her CW TV series. but word's come in that Warner Bros is developing a new Supergirl movie.

34 years after the Helen Slater-led Supergirl movie dropped in theaters, Deadline reports that Oren Uziel, who penned 22 Jump Street, The Cloverfield Paradox and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie, has been tapped to write a Supergirl movie for the 21st century. The report makes it clear that this project is still in the earliest of stages, and no producer is attached yet. While not clearly articulated in the report, it sounds like rather than being a standalone movie like the Joaquin Phoenix-led Joker, Supergirl will be set in the DC Extended Universe, as it's theorized that this movie could be a good place for Henry Cavill's Superman to return and "hatch a new persona" as Warner Bros and DC are looking to "craft a new template" for future Superman movies.

Given how many DCEU movies are in development, we'll have to wait and see whether Supergirl actually moves forward past the scripting stage. However, assuming that Supergirl does become a higher priority project, then it'll be comfortable alongside The Flash, as both heroes are currently being represented in CW's Arrowverse right now. Like her cousin Kal-El, Kara Zor-El (the most famous of the Supergirls) hailed from Krypton and was launched off the planet before it exploded. While Kara was older than Kal when Krypton died, by the time she arrived on Earth, Kal was already an adult and protecting humanity as Superman, resulting in him taking his now-younger cousin under his wing. Besides the 1984 Supergirl movie and the Supergirl TV series, the Girl of Steel's appearances outside the comics include Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League Unlimited, Smallville and Superman/Batman Apocalypse.

Although Man of Steel 2 has been in the pipeline for a while, it would be interesting to see Henry Cavill reprising Superman as a mentor to his cousin as she begins her crimefighting career. Man of Steel fans will remember that there was an empty pod Clark Kent found in the Fortress of Solitude, and the Man of Steel prequel comic revealed that this pod had been inhabited by Kara Zor-El. That revelation may not end up being canon depending on Supergirl's story, but if the DCEU is looking for another way to explore the Kryptonian side of the DC mythology, giving Supergirl her own movie is one way to do it, while still having Superman potentially involved in some capacity.
