Marvel Has Finally Revealed Where The Infinity Stones Come From

Thanos with Infinity Gauntlet

The Infinity Stones have been the ultimate MacGuffins of the MCU. They have been layered through a number of films before finally coming together in Avengers: Infinity War earlier this year. The stones have a fairly simple origin in the movies, but the comic books introduced an interesting wrinkle to the creation of the stones this week. As it turns out, the stones were created by ancient Celestials, but the purpose has yet to be revealed.

Marvel Comics' big event this year is Infinity Wars, which finds Marvel heroes battling on multiple fronts for the possession of the recently recreated Infinity Stones. The event, which was created by Gerry Duggan and Mike Deodato Jr., has had a number of twists and turns thus far, such as the reveal of Gamora as the main villain (so far).

While the main draw of Infinity Wars so far has been the creation of a new universe where every character is a fusion of two different characters (like Iron Man and Thor fusing into Iron Hammer), the latest issue of Infinity Wars (via ComicBook) seems to reveal the origin of the Infinity Stones.

Throughout the series, Loki has been attempting to learn some cosmic truths. He assembled a team of heroes and villains to help him acquire the Infinity Stones. That was not an easy thing to do -- after Gamora got them all and folded the entire universe onto itself. But through some classic Loki scheming and trickery, he acquired them all and took them to the Quarry of the Gods.

At the Quarry, the Infinity Stones lose their power, and Loki discovers a group of Celestials, who appear to be creating and mining Infinity Stones from across the multiverse. For those who may not know, Celestials are some of the oldest beings in the cosmos and they are said to have created all life. They've been referenced a few times in the MCU, and we actually see them in Guardians of the Galaxy. That's where issue #5 ends, but it's not clear what Loki will do with this new information.

Whether this will make its way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point is anyone's guess. In the films, the Infinity Stones were born from the Big Bang, but Marvel Studios could incorporate the comic origin at some point, if it wanted to, though it might be better to keep things simple for now.

Whether more backstory on the Infinity Stones is revealed or not, I'm sure fans are still very much looking forward to the release of Avengers 4, which is due to arrive in theaters on May 3, 2019. To learn everything you can about the blockbuster until then, here's what we know so far about Avengers 4.
