Michelle Williams Confirms Her Return For Venom 2

Michelle Williams as Anne Weying in Venom

Venom 2 has been slowly making progress, with the most notable update of late being that Andy Serkis has come aboard as director, taking over from Ruben Fleischer, who was busy this time around on Zombieland: Double Tap. Now Michelle Williams, who played Eddie Brock’s ex-fiancée Anne Weying in last year’s Venom, has confirmed that she will reprise her role in the sequel, saying that she’s particularly excited for work with Serkis. In Williams’ words:

I’m in. I’m such a fan of Andy’s, and I’m so inspired by what he’s been able to accomplish. He’s so gifted in such a specific way, and I’m very excited to learn from him and be around him.

Earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, Michelle Williams wasn’t sure if she’d be back for Venom 2, joking at the time that they’d have to pay her either way. But in the months since then, evidently Williams and Sony were able to work out a deal because Anne Weying will be around for Venom’s next cinematic adventure.

When Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock turned into Venom, eventually Anne Weying got dragged into his… let’s call them antics. She would soon learn about Eddie bonding with the symbiote, and while they weren’t romantically back together at the end of the Venom movie, Anne and Eddie were certainly on better terms. It’s unclear if Reid Scott, who played Anne’s new love interest, Dan Lewis, will be back for Venom 2.

Let’s also not forget that Venom also saw Anne Weying and the symbiote bonding during Venom, giving us the cinematic She-Venom and that memorable, yet super weird kiss scene. When asked by Yahoo about if Venom 2 would bring She-Venom back into the mix, Williams responded:

I hope I get equal time that way — I can say that!

You can watch/re-watch Anne Weying’s brief time as a symbiote-powered individual in Venom below.

No official plot details for Venom 2 have been revealed yet, but Andy Serkis is hard at work hashing out the story with Tom Hardy and writer Kelly Marcel, who co-wrote the first Venom movie. Production on the sequel is expected to begin later this year.

One thing we can count on happening in Venom 2 is seeing the emergence of Cletus Kasady as Carnage, who is also a Spider-Man villain in the comics, but arguably has a greater antagonistic relationship with Venom. The Venom mid-credits scene introduced Cletus in prison, with Eddie Brock going to interview him in prison and Cletus promising that when he escaped, there would be carnage. Very on the nose.

While Venom 2’s release date hasn’t been officially announced yet, it’s expected to come out on October 2, 2020 since Sony has blocked off that date for one of its Marvel projects. Keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more news on how the sequel is coming along, but for now, head to our 2019 release schedule to plan your trips to the theater for the rest of the year accordingly.
