Robert Pattinson in The Batman 2021

Robert Pattinson is our new Batman. It’s still a little jarring to read that sentence, given R. Pats has had an oddball – and overwhelmingly indie – taste in movie roles since his gig in the vampire world ended with Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. To me, it’s jarring, but to some fans there is actual anger and annoyance about the WB and DC casting, however.

However, if you ask Robert Pattinson about how he feels about the haters, his answer is surprisingly unaffected. In fact, he seems to be relishing the response to his casting in Matt Reeves’ Batman movie. He recently said of the hate:

To be honest, it was less vitriolic than I was expecting. It’s much more fun when you’re an underdog. There’s no expectation of you.

When Robert Pattinson’s name was first being bandied about to potentially play the new Batman after Ben Affleck stepped down from the DC mantle, he wasn’t the only name being pushed. In fact, there were plenty of rumors about who was on the shortlist, but the other name that jumped out again and again was Nicholas Hoult, who cut his teeth playing a superhero in Fox’s X-Men universe.

Robert Pattinson, on the other hand, hadn’t been in the franchise game since the aforementioned Twilight movies ended in a ray of sparkly vampire-ness.

Speaking in the interview with Variety, Robert Pattinson also explained why he was comfortable tackling another notable role with a built-in fanbase, finally. He mentioned if he had done it right away, after Twilight, he wouldn’t have been ready for the gig, but feels ready now.

Big movies, generally the parts aren’t as interesting — at least the stuff that was coming my way. I guess there was some fear. I think I probably would have been a little bit nervous to have gone straight into it immediately afterwards.

Robert Pattinson has, in fact, been interested in doing another franchise movie, or at least has not been against the idea previously. He’s formerly said he had a good experience on them and the biggest takeaway for why he hadn’t joined another was the perceived inability to make them R-rated.

I've not had a bad experience on any film I've done, maybe one. The only reason I'm a little cautious about big franchise films is that you can't make them R-rated.

Matt Reeves’ Batman is expected to be PG-13.

Still, Robert Pattinson seems on board for the new flick, even if there has been some backlash against the casting. It’s likely the backlash is coming given there probably isn’t a huge crossover between DC fans and Twilight franchise fans. People related to the movie have asked us to trust Matt Reeves, and that’s simply the only thing upset fans can do now. The casting has already happened. The movie is coming.

Honestly, if someone else had been cast, they’d probably be facing the same questions now too. Catch the new movie – hopefully – in the summer of 2021.
