Surprise, Not Even Brie Larson Knows When Captain Marvel 2 Is Happening

Captain Marvel in Endgame

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in an interesting place right now, as we're in the interim period between phases. The studio revealed its plans for Phase Four during San Diego Comic-Con and the D23 Expo, but there are still plenty of franchises and projects whose future is a mystery. Chief among them is the Captain Marvel sequel, as no information about Carol Danver's second solo movie has been announced. And it turns out that not even Brie Larson knows when that project will come together.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel arrived shortly before the character popped up again in Avengers: Endgame. The 90's set origin story helped set up the character and her abilities, but fans are eager to see Carol Danvers get a solo flick set in present day MCU. But when Brie Larson was recently asked if she knew when Captain Marvel 2 was going to film, she said:

No. I don’t really know what job I’m going to do next, which is very exciting. I don’t even know what my life’s gonna be! And most of this year, you know, I had to do the press tour. But then the last half of the year, I’ve just been focusing way more on just doing what I want to do that’s completely outside of my job. I just feel like it’s been this incubation time. Whether it’s incubation because I’m developing projects, and also incubation myself, being, like ‘OK, I’m going to be turning 30. I’ve been working a lot. I need to just like change it up and see what’s there for me — see who I am now. And which ways that I want to grow.’

Well, that's pretty cut and dry. Not only does Brie Larson not know when Captain Marvel's sequel will start production, she doesn't have any movies coming down the pipeline. And she seems psyched about it.

Brie Larson's comments to Variety might be disappointing for hardcore Marvel fans, who are hoping to glean some information about Captain Marvel's future in the shared universe. And while her solo movie has been announced, it's doesn't have an official release date or director. As such, it'll presumably be years before Carol Danvers returns to the big screen.

Phase Four of the MCU has been pretty clearly laid out, Marvel Studios bringing both movies and small screen adventures to audiences, courtesy of Disney+. Thor: Love and Thunder is the final movie currently on the schedule, arriving in 2021. It seems the studio will have its hands full, and Captain Marvel 2 is being pushed to a later date, likely somewhere in Phase Five.

It should be interesting to see what comes next for Carol Danvers, and how her story continues in the wake of Avengers: Endgame. The end of Captain Marvel saw her heading to space to continue fighting The Supreme Intelligence, and it's unclear what Carol did in the decades until she rescued Tony Stark and Nebula in space. Fans (including Brie Larson) also want to see her team up with Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel. We'll just have to see what comes next.

Black Widow will kickstart Phase Four of the MCU on May 1st, 2020. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
