After a long year of waiting, the Marvel Cinematic Universe returned to theaters with Cate Shortland’s Black Widow. The blockbuster finally revealed the backstory for Scarlett Johansson’s title character, while also setting some narrative seeds for the future of the MCU. And surprise, because it turns out Black Widow is coming to Blu-ray way sooner than we originally thought.

Considering Black Widow was released just weeks ago, nobody expected to be able to own their own copy of the MCU blockbuster anytime soon. But Marvel Studios is keeping the fandom on their collective toes, with the blockbuster hitting VOD on August 10th, before arriving on DVD and Blu-ray on September 14th.

This call by Marvel Studios is sure to turn a few heads, but might make sense considering the unprecedented state of the film industry. While Marvel movies are known for making insane profit at the box office, Black Widow’s story went down a bit different. The movie debuted on its first weekend to strong numbers, but attendance quickly declined as Black Widow was pirated online.

Black Widow hitting Disney+ presumably factored into the pirating factor. While subscribers had to pay extra for access to Scarlett Johansson’s solo flick, it might have made it easier to screen capture and get online. Getting Black Widow onto VOD and sold for physical release should help the House of Mouse make a bigger profit from the project.

Along with the news of Black Widow’s upcoming physical release, Marvel Studio also revealed some of the special features that will be coming to the movie’s DVD and Blu-ray. This means bloopers, as well as a number of deleted scenes. That includes some additional action sequences featuring Natasha and David Harbour’s Red Guardian.

The special features coming with Black Widow's physical release will also seemingly mark the final content we'll see from Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff. Cate Shortland's movie gave both the actress and fans some closure following Nat's death in Avengers: Endgame. But ScarJo's time in the MCU has seemingly come to an end for good. We'll just have to see if Florence Pugh's newcomer Yelena takes on the mantle and becomes an Avenger. Or perhaps a villain.

It'll be interesting to see how future Marvel releases perform at the box office. Every single installment in Phase Four was a box office success, but we're still in unprecedented times. Still, there are a trio of highly anticipated blockbusters hitting theaters over the next few months with Shang-Chi, Eternals, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Black Widow is still in theaters now. Be sure to check out the 2021 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience.
