Marvel fans were faced with some unfortunate news this past week, as it was confirmed that the acclaimed Wonder Man had been canceled at Disney+ after previously being renewed for Season 2. The exact reasoning for the decision still hasn’t been given, as of this writing. In the interim, viewers have been seeking answers about what contributed to the Yahya Abdul-Mateen II-led show’s demise. Now, the series’ co-creator/showrunner is speaking out and revealing what happened behind the scenes before the axe came down.
Andrew Guest co-created Wonder Man alongside Destin Daniel Cretton (of Shang-Chi and Spider-Man: Brand New Day fame). This weekend, following the news of the show’s cancellation, Guest took to TikTok to post a video and, in the background of the clip, is an article headline about the series’ fans. Guest took a moment to acknowledge that he was aware of how audiences were feeling before going into where development on Season 2 stood by the time it was decided the show would end:
Just want to say I’ve been listening. I appreciate you all. I feel how you all feel. And I just want to clear up what I can here. This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works, and Destin’s schedule – and no one’s schedule – was an issue…. Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared. The writers’ room was supposed to start this month. The production was supposed to begin early next year, and there was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them, even though a few months ago, it did. And that’s essentially all I really know. Numbers aren’t really shared with me.
The cancellation news admittedly already stung, but it all hits a bit harder now knowing that scheduling conflicts weren’t an issue and that the writers’ room was already set to reconvene. And that’s not all, as Guest went on to share another bittersweet detail about his work on the second season:
And even though the writer’s room hadn’t started, I had written the first episode of Season 2, and we had an outline for where the season would go. And everyone felt really good about it. It was gonna be a really incredible season that hopefully surpassed Season 1. I appreciate everybody getting out there and letting your voices be heard about how you feel about this. And I think there’s important conversations being had online about the kind of stories that we’re prioritizing and the kind of shows platforms wanna make. I hope people are listening, and I also hope that Emmy voters are thinking about Yahya and how much he deserves an Emmy for the incredible work he did on the show.
2026 Primetime Emmy nominations dropped in early July, at which point Abdul-Mateen II received a nod for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. That nom – which is the show’s only – signifies a massive elephant in the Emmys room. In my eyes, it’s a bittersweet reminder of not just Abdul-Mateen II’s performance as Simon Williams but also the great show he headlined.
Wonder Man centers on Williams, a struggling actor trying to make it in Hollywood while also trying to hide his powerful superhuman abilities. Simon soon crosses paths with disgraced actor (and former Mandarin impersonator) Trevor Slattery (Sir Ben Kingsley) seemingly by chance. From there, the mismatched duo seek roles in the Wonder Man film reboot and experience a number of ups and downs while trying to achieve their goals. What results is a light and funny bromance story that subverts Marvel Studios’ traditional storytelling approach.
It’s definitely unfortunate that Andrew Guest and co. won’t have the opportunity to tell more stories about Simon and Trevor, especially given the EP also said they – along with Cretton – were “eager” to do another season. For now, I’m just curious as to whether the general public will learn any specific details regarding Disney and Marvel’s decision not to move forward with another season.
