Family Matters Stars Reunite, Immediately Spark Talks About Steve Urkel's Return
TV nowadays is in an era of reboots, reunions, and revivals, and many cancelled series have been brought back to the small screen for another go. Now, anytime former cast members get together, we have to wonder if there's another revival in the works. Two Family Matters stars recently got together and posed for a pic together, and it's bound to get people talking about the whole crew reuniting on TV. Check out Darius McCrary and Jaleel White back together again:
Both men appeared in all nine seasons of Family Matters, with Darius McCrary playing Eddie Winslow and Jaleel White playing pop culture icon Steve Urkel. McCrary posted the photo on his Twitter account, and he didn't provide any context for why they were hanging out. Was it a social visit? Was it work-related? What was happening?
The tweet does indicate that Darius McCrary at least would be on board for a Family Matters reunion, and he and Jaleel White certainly seem to still be friendly. A real Family Members revival would naturally also need to feature Laura, Carl, Harriette, and other members of the original cast, but it certainly couldn't happen without Jaleel White. Family Matters originally revolved around the Winslow family, but Steve Urkel, his quirky look, and his catchphrases soon became the standouts of the series. A Family Matters reunion just might not matter if it happened without Steve Urkel.
Of course, if a TV reunion does happen, somebody is going to need to come up with a reason to explain why Urkel is so dashing nowadays. Jaleel White is clearly not the skinny kid he was during the run of Family Matters; he's looking much more Stefan than Steve nowadays. I suppose it could all come down to whether or not he can still do the Urkel voice.
Family Matters did come to a pretty conclusive end back in 1998, so if a reunion does happen, it won't need to pay off on any cliffhanger. If you need a refresher on what happened at the end of the series, prepare yourself for a blast from the past and take a gander at the final scene of the original run:
We got a happy ending to Family Matters in 1998, so I won't be heartbroken if we never get a revival. Still, I wouldn't object to seeing all the little genius babies Urkel and Laura have made in the past 20 years, and it would be nice to see what's going on with Eddie. We can only wait for more news.
