Netflix has announced that Idris Elba will star in a new comedy series, entitled Turn Up Charlie. Elba will star in, and executive produce, the Netflix original series. It marks the latest role for the busy actor. The actor's new show will see him play a very different role from his one on The Wire. Here is what we know about Turn Up Charlie.

Idris Elba will star as the titular Charlie, a struggling DJ and dedicated bachelor, who is in need of a career resurgence when a new job opportunity opens up. His mega-famous best friend needs a manny for his free-spirited 11-year-old daughter, and he wants Charlie for the job. Charlie reluctantly agrees, and the rest is Turn Up Charlie history. Something tells us Charlie's devotion to remaining a bachelor and not a family man might be challenged as the series evolves.

Turn Up Charlie will have eight half-hour episodes in its first season. The comedy is set in the UK. Production begins in May, so it is possible it could arrive on Netflix, later this year. Turn Up Charlie marks Idris Elba's latest TV role following his role in the series In the Long Run.

Idris Elba is one of the busiest actors in showbiz. The critically-acclaimed actor is managing marvelously successful careers in movies and television. Elba is one of the rare actors who can handle comedy as well as dramatic roles. Turn Up Charlie sounds like a wonderful outlet for him to demonstrate that versatility in yet again. While audiences are used to seeing him play tough-guys, Elba also has an equally impressive history of portraying tender characters.

Turn Up Charlie seems like it will strike a similar tone to Elba's 2007 romantic dramedy Daddy's Little Girls. While he plays the dad in that movie, his role as a manny in Turn Up Charlie is father-adjacent. So fans that enjoyed the Tyler Perry movie should enjoy this project as well. If you enjoy Elba's tough-guy roles, there is good news.

Idris Elba is set to return to his acclaimed role as DCI John Luther on the hit show Luther. The BBC reported that the fifth season of the series would begin filming in early 2018. No official release date has been set for the series' highly anticipated return. You can stream all four seasons of Luther on Netflix.

Idris Elba's next silver screen appearance will come in the Marvel epic Avengers: Infinity War. There is currently no release date for Turn Up Charlie.
