Ewan McGregor Is No Obi-Wan Kenobi In First Look At Ryan Murphy’s Halston Series
Now that Season 1 of The Mandalorian has come and gone, with fans eagerly awaiting Season 2 of the Star Wars hit, there’s another show on the Disney+ horizon that’s got them all excited: Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi series. That show won't even begin filming until next year, so we've got quite a while to wait until we can set our eyes upon it. But, McGregor is keeping plenty busy in the meantime, and we just got the first look at him in Ryan Murphy's new Halston show for Netflix. McGregor is looking decidedly un-Kenobi-like, so prepare yourselves!
Halston will see Ewan McGregor play the famed fashion designer of the same name, who's profile began to rise when he designed hats for Jackie Kennedy while she was First Lady and went on to become a star of 1970s fashion. It looks a lot like we'll be following Halston's life during his Studio 54 clubbing heyday, because at least two other famous faces are represented in Ryan Murphy's first teases of Halston. Just take a look at the footage Murphy posted to Instagram:
If you weren't able to catch on to who some of Halston's famous friends were in those three short clips, we also saw Liza Minnelli as played by Krysta Rodriguez and a very young Joel Shumacher, who'll be played by Rory Culkin. The rest of the cast will be rounded out by Gian Franco Rodriguez, Sullivan Jones, David Pittu and Rebecca Dayan.
Halston certainly looks like it will be a show filled with some glamour. This short tease of the series was already packed with some wonderful moments, even though most of it was the cast looking at the camera in mostly empty white rooms. We all know that Ryan Murphy has a penchant for intriguing visuals and attention-grabbing stories from his work on shows like American Horror Story, Glee, Nip/Tuck, Pose and American Crime Story, among others, so it's no surprise that the same properties would be found in Halston.
I, for one, can't wait to check out all of the sure to be crazy fashions that will flash before our eyes in Halston. While the designer himself was known for clean, minimalist designs that became favorites of some of the biggest celebrities of the '70s, that decade is known for having some of the most insane clothing in recent memory, so the series is sure to be a visual treat in more ways than one.
As mentioned earlier, Ewan McGregor has been keeping himself predictably busy as the wait for his Obi-Wan show gets ever shorter, with recent turns in Doctor Sleep and Birds of Prey (which is still in theaters) on the big screen. But, fans can't wait to take a look at Obi-Wan in his own series, which is said to be set between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope. If I'd heard that McGregor was playing Halston I probably wouldn't have quite been able to imagine it, but having seen just the small snippets above, I already can't see anyone else taking on the role.
The teaser that Ryan Murphy posted notes that Halston will be coming to us in 2021, but we don't know how many episodes we'll get for the new series just yet. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more on Halston as details become available, and, in the meantime, be sure to check out what you can watch on TV right now with our 2020 winter / spring premiere guide and Netflix schedule.
