The Vampire Diaries has a dedicated fanbase, and you can look no further than the success of the series’ spinoff Legacies for proof of that, even though the show will probably not be getting any more spinoffs anytime soon. Would fans be surprised to know that Taylor Swift apparently joined in their enthusiasm for the parent series?
Nina Dobrev was promoting her new movie, Run This Town, when the inevitable subject of The Vampire Diaries came up. Dobrev was asked about the show’s celebrity fanbase. She revealed that Taylor Swift was a fan, and the show tried to get her cast on it. Dobrev told E!’s Pop of the Morning:
Yeah, I remember at the very beginning we heard that Taylor Swift was a fan of the show. And then the producers tried to write a role for her. It didn't work out schedule-wise, obviously she wasn't on the show, but that was a surprising one.
Nina Dobrev admits she was surprised to learn that Taylor Swift was a fan of The Vampire Diaries. It is surprising in the sense that Swift is so busy. As she demonstrated in her Miss Americana documentary, maintaining a music empire is no easy feat. That said, Swift is a confirmed TV fan. She guest-starred on CSI back in 2009.
Hence, a guest spot on The Vampire Diaries would not have been out of the question. Ed Sheeran’s controversial cameo on Game of Thrones came up as an example of a music superstar appearing on an iconic TV show. On whether the backlash against Sheeran makes it a good thing that Taylor Swift did not appear on The Vampire Diaries, Nina Dobrev remained enthusiastic about the idea. Dobrev said:

No, I think it would've been great.
There you have it! Nina Dobrev would have been cool with Taylor Swift putting in an appearance on The Vampire Diaries. Would it have made her favorite episodes? Sadly, fans will never know. I would have been totally there for Swift starring. To put the timing of Swift’s potential cameo into perspective, it would have been between Swift’s second and third album – Fearless and Speak Now, respectively.
At the time, Taylor Swift was still technically considered country. That is, if this proposed cameo was when The Vampire Diaries began, which seems to be what Nina Dobrev indicated with “the very beginning.” The Vampire Diaries premiered in 2009, which meant Swift was still on a hot streak from Fearless.
I would like to know what kind of character The Vampire Diaries had in mind for Taylor Swift to play. Back at the beginning, the drama seemed to be dealing with a victim of the week. I could have also seen Swift trying her hand at playing a vampire. We will likely never know on The Vampire Diaries front.
If she is a fan, there is always a chance the pop superstar could cameo on Legacies. New episodes of The Vampire Diaries spinoff are airing throughout this winter and spring on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW. Legacies and The Vampire Diaries are both currently streaming on Netflix alongside 2020 content.
