The Handmaid’s Tale may not be coming to a Hulu near you any time soon. Elisabeth Moss has provided a blunt update on where production on Season 4 stands. The award-winning drama is one of many with a filming schedule up in the air in light of our recent health crisis.

Elisabeth Moss explained where The Handmaid’s Tale was in its production schedule when it and many other shows had to end filming early. It, and several other streaming genre shows, were among those that had to stop filming. It turns out that the dark series did not get far into filming Season 4 when it had to shut down. Moss explained, telling Extra:

We were only two weeks in, so we actually have an entire season to shoot. We want to go back to work because families have people to support and rent they need to pay, but at the same time no human’s life is worth a TV show. We’re just trying to figure out how to do it safely for everybody.

It is unclear from that statement when The Handmaid’s Tale will begin filming again. Season 4 is nowhere near complete, so the cast and crew have a long road ahead of them. And that is a wait which means the series is not close to returning to the air any time soon, hence fans will have to keep contemplating the questions they have for a while longer.

The good news for fans is that they not only have Season 4 to anticipate. They also have a spinoff series to look forward to. On the flip side, fans will also have ample time to continue letting any hard feelings go with regards to the drama’s previous season. It is unclear how far off The Handmaid’s Tale’s premiere date will now be because of the delayed filming.

The industry is still trying to navigate what is going to happen next. NBC’s This Is Us has talked not starting until January 2021 to start filming on its upcoming season. Time will tell if The Handmaid’s Tale has to follow suit. Another aspect to resuming that Elisabeth Moss mentioned is the safety of the show’s cast and crew.

While acknowledging the financial difficulties the delay has put on The Handmaid’s Tale’s cast and crew, Elisabeth Moss explained her desire to exert caution. Moss is not the only one concerned over figuring out how to proceed, safely. Blue Bloods had reportedly been looking into getting a robot said to zap COVID-19.

As for Elisabeth Moss, there has been some positive news for fans wanting to see her in other TV projects besides The Handmaid’s Tale. Back in late February, Moss revealed that she loves Hallmark Christmas movies and Hallmark reached out in a bid to make one starring Moss happen. That is some positive news to consider while fans wait for Season 4.

Plus, The Handmaid’s Tale’s creator has another adaptation in the works. As for the Hulu series, there is still a lot of work to be done before The Handmaid’s Tale can return. With only two weeks of filming done when it had to cease, there was not enough completed to warrant finishing off the season with some animated techniques, à la The Blacklist.

The first three seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale are currently streaming on Hulu. As you can tell from Elisabeth Moss’ update, a premiere date for Season 4 is still pending. While you wait for Season 4’s arrival, though, you can check out this summer’s premieres.
