How WandaVision’s Elizabeth Olsen Really Felt About Wearing Marvel’s Comic-Accurate Scarlet Witch Costume

Marvel Studios, over the years, has tried its best with comic-accurate superhero costumes, yet often, what works on the pages of a comic doesn’t translate fully to the big screen. I know X-Men fans lament the fact that their favorite mutant team gets relegated to skin-tight black leather most of the time, even though James Mangold teased Wolverine’s yellow costume in an end-credits scene for The Wolverine that never saw the light of day. In the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision, Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany will wear Halloween costumes that resemble the comic-accurate looks of Scarlet Witch and Vision (as seen in a trailer for the show), so I asked Olsen her thoughts on finally getting to don the suit. Her answer is in the above clip.

Wanda and Vision have been part of the Avengers and X-Men lore since the earliest days of the comic books, having been introduced to Marvel readers in March 1964. Scarlet Witch has a very specific look in the books. It resembles this, more often than not:

Scarlet Witch

But Elizabeth Olsen, despite having played Scarlet Witch in several Marvel features dating back to Avengers: Age of Ultron, hasn’t worn anything remotely close to that outfit… until WandaVision. We were able to see the first three episodes of the Disney+ series, and the Halloween episode was not featured. But during our recent junket for WandaVision, I asked Olsen about the outfit, and she elaborated:

Well, I loved it. I loved it. And you’ll see more than moments of it, and I just thought it was a joy to put the thing on -- to put that huge headband on, and the leotard and the pink tights. It was… the whole thing was just hilarious. So yeah, I’m right there with you. [Laughing]

Seeing the costume in WandaVision wouldn’t have nearly the impact if Elizabeth Olsen had been rocking it ever since Age of Ultron. I do not know how Marvel Studios chooses which heroes and villains WILL get to have a costume that was lifted off of the page, and who gets alterations. Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) all look like their comic counterparts, but then heroes like Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) get alterations.

I can’t tell, based on the very quick clips, which “decade” the Halloween episode will fall into. So far, each episode of WandaVision has recreated a classic sitcom from a specific decade. We’ve seen The Dick Van Dyke Show, Bewitched and The Brady Bunch play an influence. We will see what’s to come soon. WandaVision begins streaming on Disney+ on Friday, January 15, with the series’ first two episodes.
