Supergirl Showrunners Talk ‘Familiar Faces’ Returning To Final Season, So What About Mon-El?

Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers/Supergirl and Christopher Wood as Mon-El in Supergirl.

Supergirl is getting ready to fly into its final season this week, and even though Team Supergirl will be busy dealing with even more villains in National City, fans could see some familiar faces pop up. Showrunners Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller tease an emotional season and even speak out about the possibility of a certain character making a return.

The final season of any show means that fans can most likely expect returning characters, storylines that mirror the first seasons, and so on. Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller explained to TVLine their goals for familiar faces in the final season, with Queller saying:

We absolutely have plans for familiar faces to hopefully appear in the season finale. We’re hoping that works out and we’ll have a very emotional full circle with some of our own favorites.

One character that many fans undoubtedly want to see one last time is Mon-El, played by Christopher Wood. Wood was a series regular on Supergirl for the second and third seasons and returned to guest star in Season 5. Now that he is married to Supergirl herself, Melissa Benoist, and recently had a baby with her, could it be possible that Mon-El will make one last return? Robert Rovner weighed in on the possibility of Christopher Wood's Mon-El turning up at least one more time:

At this point, we don’t have plans for Mon-El to return, but if it takes us there… We love Chris. He’s a part of the Supergirl family, but at the moment, we don’t have plans for him to return.

Supergirl’s ending was first announced last fall, with Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh and more stars commenting on their gratitude for the series and their reactions to the cancellation. The news came as a shock to fans, but not a surprise as Benoist is now a new mother and she and the producers came to a mutual understanding to end the series. It's been a wild ride for the Girl of Steel on television, as Supergirl started out as a CBS series before moving to The CW for Season 2.

Although Supergirl is ending, the nature of the expansive Arrowverse means it's possible to see the characters appear on other shows, much like how David Ramsey’s Diggle will be appearing on The Flash sporadically, as well as a possibility of another Arrow superhero. Perhaps even spinoff series Superman & Lois will be a starting point for Supergirl characters' recurrences.

Just who will return to National City one last time before fans say goodbye? Tune into the final season of Supergirl premiering Tuesday, March 30 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW!
