Eisner Censors Moore

I'm hunting wery wealthy wabbitsMichael Moore is popular with people who support his politics, but not really with anyone else. So it's no surprise that his latest film is already embroiled in controversy before it is even released.

According to Moore, Disney is trying to block Fahrenheit 9/11 from being seen, out of fear of reprecussions from the Bush administration. Here's Moore in his own words:

"Yesterday I was told that Disney, the studio that owns Miramax, has officially decided to prohibit our producer, Miramax, from distributing my new film, "Fahrenheit 9/11." The reason? According to today's (May 5) New York Times, it might "endanger" millions of dollars of tax breaks Disney receives from the state of Florida because the film will "anger" the Governor of Florida, Jeb Bush."

Michael Moore has severe persecution anxiety, and it wouldn't be unlike him to drum up fake controversy over his work to falsely prove some dumbass political point. However, this time that doesn't seem to be the case. The story has already run in the New York Times, which lends a lot of creedence to his claims.

Whether you agree with what Moore says and does or not, you have to agree that he should have the right to say it. Movie studios should not be so afraid of the government that they cannot release films they think may offend political figures. That's precisely what the first amendment is all about.

Hopefully Miramax and the Weinstein's will find a way around this.
