My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 Is Happening, Here Are The Details

Have you been wondering what the wacky family at the center of the smash indie hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding has been up to? If so, you're in luck because Nia Vardalos and the gang are coming back for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.

Variety reports out of the American Film Market that My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 just took one step closer to production as Universal Pictures has signed on to distribute the sequel in the United States, as well as in such international territories as Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Greece, Italy, Latin America, Scandinavia, South Africa and Spain. While it's unknown how much Universal paid for a part in this property, it seems a solid buy considering the original My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Made for just $5 million dollars, the winsome rom-com blew up at the box office, earning more than $368 million worldwide.

Nia Vardalos, who starred and won an Oscar nod for her script of the first film, announced plans for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 last May on Twitter:

At the time, she already had secured Gold Circle Films, HBO Films, and Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson's Playtone to produce. Now, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 also boasts a director, specifically Kirk Jones. The English auteur seems a good choice for this sure to be anticipated sequel, considering he's proven himself in making family-friendly romps, from his charming debut Waking Ned Devine and kid-friendly follow-up Nanny McPhee to the Robert De Niro-fronted dramedy Everybody's Fine and the star-stuffed comedy What to Expect When You're Expecting. Next up, he'll wrangle the big and boisterous Portokalos family.

Nia Vardalos has tipped that My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 will see the Portokalos family readying for a bigger, fatter wedding celebration. But in the midst of much joy and nuptial chaos, there's to be a bit of drama as the clan is forced to face an old family secret.

We'd assume much--if not all of the original cast--will be likely to return. But that has not yet been confirmed.

We'll give you more on this story as it develops. In the meantime, revisit the joy of My Big Fat Greek Wedding with its charming trailer, posted above.
