Tekken Turned Screen Gem
Tekken is a great fighting game, and one I can probably kick your ass at. But does it need to be a movie?
Sony’s Screen Gems thinks so. According to Variety they’ve teamed up with Cruel Sky Entertainment (They’re responsible for Baby Geniuses, how’s that for credibility?) to bring the popular fighting game property to the screen with a $50 million dollar budget. There’s some talk of it being based on the game’s plot, but as an avid fan of the game since it’s arcade inception, let me assure you there isn’t one. Granted, each Tekken game has a few really great character based cut scenes at the beginning of it, but this is a game about kicking ass. No time to waste on story. So, director Charles Stone (Mr. 3000) will have his work cut out for him getting something cohesive out of a game with nothing beyond a few really cool flying Karate kicks. I’m a big fan of Eddie, maybe he can base the movie around Eddie’s days as a disco club bartender who gets really angry and starts beating people the hell up with his groovy disco moves. As long as he works in a way for someone to sucker punch and Angel, I’ll be happy. |
