Empire And Star Crossed Over On Fox

Empire Star Fox

Crossovers, they're not just for superheroes anymore. The increasing acceptance of shared universes has led to some amazing moments in film and television in recent years, and the success of these shared universes means that there are definitely more of those moments on the way. Fox has had some luck itself with crossovers, including the recent Brooklyn Nine-Nine and New Girl extravaganza, and now it looks like Empire and Star have officially crossed over with one another.

Empire crossed over with the freshman drama Star last night, and a report from THR confirms that we officially have a canon crossover on our hands. The crossover was made official prior to the finale when Fox released a clip from the Empire midseason finale in which Lucious (Terrence Howard) encountered Star's Roland (Lenny Kravitz) in a lounge, and the two engaged in a heated exchange over the possibility of Lucious signing Roland's daughter. We don't know much about the fictional history between these two characters, but their first crossover moment promises a ton of intense exchanges in the future.

This crossover moment shouldn't necessarily surprise us at this point. Lee Daniels (who executive produces both series) has specifically said that both series definitely exist within the same universe; the only thing he hasn't really opened up on is the way in which their two narratives may specifically tie into one another. Given the increasing popularity and acceptance of shared universes among mainstream audiences (and not just comic book fans who can keep track of such things) it seems highly likely and highly logical that the shows will continue this trend.

However, don't expect many more crossover moments to occur in the immediate future. Empire ended for its midseason break last night, and Star is not currently slated to take over its timeslot until it returns later this spring. That being said, establishing the relationship between Lucious and Roland definitely lays the groundwork for future crossovers.
