Bruce Willis’ wife Emma Heming has really stepped up since the action movie star was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. In addition to continuing to help care for her husband, raise their two young daughters and keep fans updated on his condition, she’s also become an advocate for caregivers and dementia research. What I didn’t know about Heming is that she was engaged to someone else when she first met the Die Hard star — and she recalled how her mother called her out.

Emma Heming married Bruce Willis in 2009, more than a decade before his health forced the actor to retire in 2022. Speaking on Hoda Kotb’s Making Space podcast, Heming recalled meeting Willis at the gym, “like most people in Hollywood do,” and apparently he made a strong impression on her pretty quickly. She told Kotb:

The things I remember about him was just how warm and charismatic, how funny he was, but always really took the time to want to learn more about me, just more about who I was, about my life. Prior to that, I had never really thought about Bruce Willis. I grew up watching Moonlighting, but I was never, like, an action sort of movie fan.

The actor — who turned 71 this year — clearly had chemistry with Emma Heming, and it sounds like he was pretty interested in getting to know her better. The one big issue with that was that Heming wasn’t single at the time, and her mother certainly had thoughts about that. Heming continued:

So when I noticed him, I had said to my mother, ‘You know, I met Bruce Willis, and he’s a really lovely man.’ And my mom’s like, ‘What are you doing? You’re engaged to be married.’

Oof, you can always count on mom for a good reality check. Luckily for Bruce Willis, Emma Heming’s relationship didn’t last, but he still had to wait a while before finally reconnecting with his gym buddy. Heming recalled:

It wasn’t until years later, after my engagement fizzled, thankfully, that we went on our first date, and I just really loved being around him. It was just something very warm, safe and fun, you know. My husband is so full of life, and it was a really beautiful time. It was a really great time in our lives.

Bruce Willis and Emma Heming Willis went on to have two daughters — Mabel, 14, and Evelyn, 12 — adding to the three girls Bruce shares with Demi Moore — Rumer, 37, Scout, 35, and Tallulah, 29.

Emma Heming has been open about the family’s journey since her husband’s diagnosis, keeping good memories alive by sharing memories and videos — including one of him on a roller coaster, where he sounds like a fun-loving kid. She’s also spoken out about Bruce Willis’ first symptoms and her decision to move him into a separate house where he could get the care he needed.

It sounds like Bruce Willis got incredibly lucky by choosing to befriend Emma Heming at the gym all those years ago — and even luckier that her engagement didn’t work out!
