Iron Man Is Not A Drunk

With most superheroes the things you look forward to most usually involve who they’re going to fight next or what super power the newest movie will show off. When it comes to Iron Man, the thing I’ve most been looking forward to is seeing Tony Stark drunk.

One of the things that sets Iron Man apart from his comic book competitors is his battle with addiction. Iron Man is an alcoholic and if you saw Tony guzzling scotch then you probably thought of a future in which he might actually have to face those boozy demons. It’s even better since Tony Stark is played by Robert Downey Jr., a man who's had his own real life struggle with addiction. It needs to happen, I want it to happen, it would be a brand new, unexplored page in the by now overdone superhero genre if it did happen; but it’s not happening.

MTV caught up with Robert Downey out promoting The Soloist, and got him talking Iron Man 2. When asked if they’d explore “Demon in a Bottle”, the alcoholism storyline in the comics, during the course of the next film, Downey responded, “Not really. As a matter of fact, I think that’s probably best saved,” he says, “because it’s such its own storyline.”

So maybe we’ll get it in another Iron Man movie down the road. That’s fine, except the thing is they have Robert Downey Jr. right now and who knows if they’ll still have him for Iron Man 4 or whenever the heck they get around do it. This is the role Robert Downey was born to play, I’d hate to see him finish his run as Iron Man without tackling it.
