We all like to pay attention to what movies are going to bring in the most money at the box office for the weekend, but it's always good to shift focus to the frontmen of those movies: the actors. Some actors have amassed quite a resume throughout their long careers, participating in everything from big budget blockbusters to smaller indie films. With such a large number of projects under their belt, it stands to reason that these actors have a pretty high box office gross. Summertime is all about the big box office movies, and as such the list of top 10 highest grossing actors is being updated with a new member.
The list of top 10 highest grossing actors is a summation of all the money an individual actor's movies have earned. It's not about who is the most paid, but who has the most successful movies by box office standards. It's sort of like a list of the most popular actors, and you definitely see all of these faces at least twice a year. This is the top 10 list of highest grossing actors according to data from Box Office Mojo:
1. Harrison Ford: $4.9 billion
2. Samuel L. Jackson: $4.7 billion
3. Morgan Freeman: $4.4 billion
4. Tom Hanks: $4.3 billion
5. Robert Downey, Jr.: $3.9 billion
6. Eddie Murphy: $3.8 billion
7. Tom Cruise: $3.6 billion
8. Johnny Depp: $3.3 billion
9. Michael Caine: $3.3 billion
10. Scarlett Johansson: $3.3 billion
Scarlett Johansson is the newest name on this list, coming in at the number ten spot, which is notable for a few reasons. First of all, she's the youngest person on the list by a good 20 years. The second youngest is her MCU co-star Robert Downey Jr. at 51 years old. It's a huge accomplishment for someone who's only 31 and it means that Johansson knows how to pick a project, balancing big-budget movies with indie films where she is the lead. She's also the only woman in the top 10, with the next woman on the list being Cameron Diaz at 19. This could change, though, given that there are some high-profile blockbusters starring women either in theaters now or on the horizon, like Jennifer Lawrence in X-Men: Apocalypse or Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast.
It's important to remember that some of these actors are not the main draw of their movies. Big money-making movies are usually a team effort and feature an ensemble cast. For example, Harrison Ford is in the number one spot, but his highest grossing movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was not a solo effort (I did not mean to do that). Ford really had more of a supporting role in that film, working alongside Daisy Ridley and John Boyega.
With that in mind, there really aren't too many surprises on this list. Most of these actors were a part of huge franchises like Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine in The Dark Knight Trilogy and Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean. Others are leading men who have been in dozens of high profile movies like Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks (the Toms, if you will) while others play a supporting role like Samuel L. Jackson, who is in practically every movie. It's a pretty good list, but one that's likely to go through a lot of changes in the next few years. What do you think of the top 10 list? Is there anyone you were expecting to see that you didn't? Let us know in the comments.
