The Animated Spider-Man Movie Has Cast Miles Morales

Shameik Moore Dope Miles Morales Spider-Man Movie

With the untitled animated Spider-Man movie not set to be released until the end of next year, it's not a huge surprise that we don't really know much about it yet. That being said, today has delivered two big pieces of news about the project, as Shameik Moore has selected to voice the heroic webslinger Miles Morales, and Liev Schreiber has been tapped to play the superhero movie's lead villain.

The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report this new information... though there sadly aren't too many extra details featured in their story. At this time, Sony Pictures Animation is keeping a tight lid on the identity of the central antagonist in the animated movie, and the only thing that's really known about the plot is that it will center on Miles Morales as he balances life as a teenager and as a wall-crawling vigilante (you know, the basic Spider-Man set-up). Phil Lord and Chris Miller penned the screenplay for the movie, and its set to be directed by the team of Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians) and Bob Persichetti (writer of The Little Prince).

Shameik Moore is not exactly a household name just yet, but he does most definitely qualify as a rising star in the industry. Starting his career with various bit parts and TV gigs, he broke through in a major way thanks to his lead role in the critically-acclaimed indie Dope. Most recently he's been playing Shaolin Fantastic on the Netflix series The Get Down, but he has also completed work as one of the stars in James Franco's upcoming directorial effort The Pretenders. The animated Spider-Man movie will be his first time doing voice-over work for a character.

Liev Schreiber as Sabertooth in X-Men Origins Wolverine

While Shameik Moore is just starting out in the industry, Liev Schreber counts as a veteran in many respects. Not only has does he have experience with voice-over in movies, television and video games, but he also already has some comic book movie time under his belt too (having previously starred as Sabertooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine). As noted earlier, it's not clear who exactly he will be playing in the animated Spider-Man movie, though it's been rumored that the villain will be The Prowler.

Based on the character created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, the Miles Morales animated Spider-Man movie is now currently in production, being designed by Sony Pictures Animation. The film is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 21, 2018, and we will be sure to have more details for you about the project as it continues through development.
