Even though Sony has found success with Spider-Man through a partnership with Marvel Studios, the studio is still trying to get their own thing off the ground. Sony is building its own cinematic universe using Spider-Man side characters, which will include Silver and Black, a Silver Sable and Black Cat team-up movie. We don't know much about it, but now we at least know when we can see it. Sony has set Silver and Black with a release date for 2019, arriving just in time for Valentine's Day.
Courtesy of a tweet from Exhibitor Relations, Silver and Black will be hitting theaters on February 8, 2019. Assuming this release date sticks, that means the movie will be coming out the same weekend as The LEGO Movie 2, which could be a poor match-up for the superhero movie. The LEGO Movie was a big success, and there's no reason to think its sequel won't follow in its footsteps just yet. The following weekend it'll have to contend with Bride of Frankenstein and an untitled Fox/Marvel project, so we'll have to wait and see how that turns out.
Silver and Black will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, currently its only saving grace. The film is a result of Sony trying to create its own cinematic universe using characters related to Spider-Man. Silver and Black, as well as the upcoming Venom movie, may or may not be connected to Spider-Man: Homecoming and the MCU. Those close to production have been somewhat vague on how this is going to work, but there's a good chance that the movies don't actually have anything to do with Spider-Man.
Starring Marvel anti-heroes Silver Sable and Black Cat, not much is actually known about the film. A few rumors have pointed to the two women being forced to join up after one of Black Cat's heists goes bad. According to rumors, Silver Sable will remain close to her comic book origins, being a bounty hunter from the nation of Symkaria. In the film she is hunting down antagonist Mendell Stromm for his experimentations on her people. And she recruits Black Cat, who stole something from Stromm, to help her. Appearances from other Spider-Man villains are also on the table, such as Scorpion, Tarantula, Chameleon, and Kraven the Hunter. No one has yet been cast in the title roles.
