Thor: Ragnarok's Tessa Thompson Is Still Campaigning For An All-Female Marvel Movie

Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok

For a while, the only female superhero was running around the Marvel Cinematic Universe was Black Widow, that's fortunately no longer the case. From Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy to Scarlet Witch in the Avengers, more women are coming forward to battle the forces of evil in this continuity. One of the newer additions is Tessa Thompson's Brunnhilde, better known as Valkyrie, who debuted in Thor: Ragnarok. Thompson was among the many Marvel actresses who approached the studio last year to campaign for an all-female-led MCU movie, and from her conversations with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, she thinks that there's a good chance such a project will eventually be brought to life. Thompson said:

I think Kevin Feige is really excited by the idea, and if you look at what's happened already in Phase 4 with me and Valkyrie and our story, and then in Black Panther the women rule supreme. There's an interest -- they're doing Captain Marvel, they're doing a Black Widow -- there's an interest in having women at the forefront of this phase. I feel like it's hopeful, who knows.

Earlier in her interview with IGN, Tessa Thompson mentioned that Marvel is "hugely collaborative," noting that Thor: Ragnarok was the product of the conversation the studio had with stars Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo. Throw in Captain Marvel, the MCU's first superheroine-led movie, coming out next year and a Black Widow movie now in development, and it sounds like the all-female movie that Thompson pitched with Zoe Saldana, Brie Larson, Scarlett Johansson, Pom Klementieff and Karen Gillan is being seriously considered.

Assuming the Black Widow movie ends up being made, that means only three movies for the MCU's Phase Four have been announced so far, the other two being Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. That said, if we consider sequels that will likely happen (like Doctor Strange 2 and Black Panther 2), movies spotlighting brand-new characters (my fingers are still crossed for Nova) and both the X-Men and Fantastic Four potentially being incorporated into this franchise, this all-female movie will face a lot of competition for one of these Phase Four spots. That being said, the project (I would call it A-Force, like the heroine-filled comic book series published a couple years back) has the advantage of being something especially unique to the superhero movie genre, and if there's one thing that moviegoers love, it's novelty. So maybe that will boost its chances of being greenlit.

You can see Tessa Thompson next in the Alex Garland-directed Annihilation, which hits theaters on February 23. The actress is also rumored to reprise Valkyrie for Avengers: Infinity War this May, but that hasn't been confirmed yet. Keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more updates about the MCU, including if this all-female movie will actually happen.
